Looks like Valimaki did fine with very limited minutes with Tanev.
I wouldn't mind seeing the splits for Andersson with his partners this preseason as well.

Key problem is the when and against who as well. Kylington had more ice against weak rosters with Tanev for example. Valimaki's only time with Tanev was last night against a reasonably full Jets team. A lot of Zadorov's time was in the Edmonton game.
Amazing to see what Tanev can do with a partner though. Great signing.

And some people wanted him exposed even after the season ended.

Andersson with ...
Hanifin xGF% 64%
Zadorov xGF% 27%
Oddly enough Gubranson / Mackey were a positive duo in only 11 minutes of play.

Based on Valimaki's on-ice performance since he's joined the club, I've had low expectations for him compared to most posters. He excites me because of the high praise he gets from scouts and management but from what I've seen, he's going to take some time, which is okay. On performance this camp, he doesn't deserve a spot ahead of Kylington or Zadorov. I think he'll be rotating with whoever is unable to secure Sutter's trust this year.

I think Valimaki's issue is he tries to do too much and gets caught out of position. If he can just simplify his game more, pick his spots better he would be fine.
There were times last season where the effort was there, but mistakes likely led to his confidence issues. Just needs to mature, play more within the structure.

This is where people need to be careful how they interpret the stats.
Andersson's time with Zadorov came earlier in the pre-season when Andersson was awful.
Conversely, Andersson has been good to great in the last two games (when his time with Hanifin occurred)
It has little to do with Andersson-Zadorov as a pairing, and everything to do with how Andersson has progressed through the pre-season, IMO.

Zadorov has cratered every partner he's had this preseason. Why would Anderssons splits not apply to Zadorov?
Could be that Hanifin-Andersson are just a better pair together. Chemistry is a thing too.

For sure it is.
But we were actually able to watch the games. And doing so showed that Andersson started the pre-season really poorly. And was substantially better the last two games.
Regardless of who he played with.

I wasn’t sure where to put this, but the Athletic writers ranked all the starting goalies in the league. Markstrom ranked 11th:
Quote:
11. Jacob Markstrom, Flames
Average Tier rating last five seasons: 2.87
Highest Tier rating: 1.97 (2020)
Lowest Tier rating: 3.50 (2017)
Few goalies in our tiers have fluctuated as much as Markstrom the past five years.
After a strong season with Vancouver in 2019-20, the 6-foot-6 goalie was rewarded with a six-year, $36 million contract in Calgary. He then went through an up and down season in which he got hurt and had trouble acclimating to his new team.
“He had a real struggle last year,” said a source who knows him well. “Part of it was personal, (being) by himself, then COVID (protocols). He really struggled with (the) COVID (situation). I do think he’s a top, top NHL goaltender.”
“I think he’s a good goaltender and he’s got size and he moves well,” a former goalie said. “Very much consistency issues with him. We kind of saw it a lot last year. … I’m going to give him more of a positive look in Year 2 (with a new team) than he probably showed last year.”
That seemed to be the common belief with the experts. Throw the first year in the trash and expect to see the real Markstrom this season.
“Just scratching the surface to stardom,” a league executive said.
“He was the MVP in Vancouver two years in a row. Then he gets to Calgary … (and) hits the ditch. But raw ability and talent, he’s special,” a former goalie said

I think I rank him slightly but not much higher. But those comments - “hit the ditch”. Markstrom had three parts of the season - started great, got hurt and played mediocre goal, then finished strong. At no point did he hit the ditch. And the source who knows him well completely missed the injury against Vancouver as a factor?

Mike Smith at 26th in that list.
And you guys are right ... the guys interviewed for the Markstrom section haven't a clue what happened last year in Calgary.
Doesn't look good on the article to even mention being hurt.

I guess he was 'by himself' here, but he was basically on team Sweden in Canada with his best buddy Lindholm.

They did bring in one of his best friends in Gudbranson. Might be part of the reason behind that pickup

Gudbranson must have a lot of best friends - probably had to outbid their teams - that is the only explanation I see for that contract.

Gudbranson probably had a 2 year deal on the table at a lower salary. Flames had to overpay to get one year
