Yeah that was a horrible shot and ends up with a horrible lie.

Consider Rory - he was in the bunker and laid up. If someone in the first group had birdied, he would have known that he couldn't lay up, and would have to have tried and go for the green from the bunker.

Just in that recent example.
Someone makes birdie and McIlroy doesn't lay up but theirs caution to the wind.

But it was an impossible shot so the advantage is pretty small. But any other lie and he would have gone for the green no matter what.

None the less, he had information that changed the way he played the hole - unfair advantage

In the end it wouldn't have changed much, it would have made him maybe more aggressive on his third shot, but he couldn't reach the green with the lie he had, if he had even a slight chance he would have given it a try even with knowing he only needed par, because birdie wins. I just don't think it was that unfair and I don't think any of the players did either or they would have objected.

At the same time, had he been in the first group he probably lays up and hopes no one birdies.

Wish they would have used the drivable par 4.

Rory almost turned this into a driveable par 4, nothing like a 330 yard carry...
