I’m watching the Deer Hunter for the first time, and boy howdy is this movie taking its time to get going - 50 minutes into the flock and we’re still at the wedding.

Most of this could have been cut.

Young Christopher Walken looks positively angelic. Like Sauron before the Melkor-worship.

Obviously, there will be spoilers.

That entire wedding sequence that goes on for half an hour does pay off with the news that buddy never even slept with his pregnant wife.

As if going to Vietnam wasn’t kick in the dick enough.

Great movie, intense. Saw this at North Hill with that big-ass dished screen and 70mm Dolby the year it came out (1978). The great John Cazale appeared in five major films over a seven years, all of which were nominated for best picture. Cool thread btw. Kinda neat to GT an old and great movie seen for the first time.

Thus far, Meryl Streep has felt under used. Though she’s probably not Meryl Streep yet.

But then, she must be - this is a heavy hitter of a movie. She wasn’t a nobody.
