So I requested quotes from gemstone and trimlight. It’s been a week and haven’t heard from either company. I did notice in my security footage someone looking at my roof today so I would guess I will be getting a quote from one of the companies at some point soon.

Big difference from what I can tell is gemlight is individually assignable where as trimlight can only change every other pixel. I’ll keep everyone posted on my quote and I’ll be getting the other thread going shortly. Once I go to my compurer.

Gemlight just emailed me a quote for 3600.

Jeez. That seems like a lot.

I just got mine as well. It came in at 2200. The general rule of thumb in the Christmas light scene is 1 usd per pixel. I don’t think it’s too horrible the more I think about it. I was hoping it would be in the 1500 range. I’ll do a breakdown of price vs DIY in a little bit to give some comparisons. There is a lot of good things with the gemstone lights that I am sure you are paying for so it’ll be interesting to see what that cost breakdown comes in at.

Did they tell you what spacing was for your lights? I’m trying to figure out if 3” or 4” since it looks bigger than 2”

$160 for lights (400 pixels $40 per 100 shipped. It would actually be slightly less but we will ball park cost for any extra little wires or pigtails needed.)
$80 Cheapest controller that can handle these lights is 60 usd can be cheaper if you have existing rasp Pi’s Already.
$250 for j channel. Need 2 Channels at $1.5 per feet added extras for cuts since comes in 10 ft lengths)
$100 for power supply and enclosure

So we can round up to $600.00 for hardware related stuff. If install is like any industry it’s about double hardware so we are looking at $1200.00. Which leaves $1000.00 for software and support. Now In the DIY world software is free however there is a steep and technical curve. You can buy professional software for $300 but same learning curve exists.

My pixel calculations was also on 3” spacing so that would skew numbes a bit but wouldn’t fluctuate costs much. Roof line is the hardest part of Christmas lighting historically so is $1600 worth permanent install and not having to go up on a ladder and simple app integration. The DIY route does not have the ability to control easily on an app for quick changes that I am aware of yet so being able to control from phone for 335 days a year and potentially tapping into the infrastructure for 30 days of Christmas to run programs may make sense.

There is also other things that add up diy route such as need to solder and purchase equipment. Computer for programming ect. My assumptions are also that the pixels are ws2811 individually assignable smart pixels. Prices would be different if they are using a different set up like ws2812 but my guess is they as 2811s

You can buy your own couch for like a 1/3 of that.

I assume a pixel is an individual light?

How much coverage did you ask for in the quote? Same as the pic above? All windows?

Yes sorry pixel is each individual led. I’ve been reading too much and have fallen into their jargon language.

The quote is just roof lines no windows. Which works for what I am planning anyways. I can’t find a good way to make my windows integrate nicely without seeing wires so I would just do them separately at the holidays as part of major display. In my case I have a peaked roof over my garage. A lower roof above garage and a run over my front windows.

I was honestly expecting more, but maybe that's just me being older and lazier than 10 years ago. I wouldn't be crawling my ass in attics and on rooftops for that anymore :P.

I just thought of another thing their pixels are going to be more expensive because they have 4 lights in each. Red Green Blue (this forms the RGB of any colour) and a 4th of Warm white. Majority of pixel nodes don't include the warm white so I don't know which type they are using. I emailed them back but guy is out of the office until next week.

Here is their outline for the 2200 quote I apologize for large pictures.

NSFW!

Here is my ideal outline and pixel counts that I want to run when fully operational. Again these lights with windows would only be for Christmas maybe Halloween where as roof line I want to run permanently. I will have more stand alone displays in the yard as well that aren't included.

NSFW!

What all are you wanting the lights to do? I have a couple of these kits, and once I talk to a buddy who is a roofer (not chicken to go 30 feet up in the air like I am) I will be installing another set along the eave line of the soffit.

The first set I installed in November 2017 and they worked just fine again this winter, they just yellowed a bit. The biggest downside to these strips is you are limited to a few patterns or solid colours. You cannot make them dance or chase.

Those do work good however if you have a dead pixel they are quite a bit more difficult to replace. I’m going with something like this for a pixel node which can be more flexible for replacing if something dies and changing into props.

As I said I’m gpong big with dancing and programmes sequencing and each light to be individually accessed and controllable.

So I heard back from gemstone and their lights are spaced every 9” and they are a proprietary lighting chip so not based on popular ws281x which means for what I am looking to do long term they won’t be the best solution and I will have to go the diy route.
