The Donut Thread [Split from Popeyes]
Mod edit- split this thread out as there was some potential good discussion. Topic starts with Tim Horton's "food."

Meh the two or three I eat a year are good enough. If you are a real donut connoisseur you would be visiting a proper bakery.

It's funny that 4 day old donuts from the Donut Mill (yes, I stock up when I pass by Red Deer) are vastly better than even "fresh" donuts anything from Tim Hortons.

Even Safeway donuts are leaps and bounds ahead of Tim Hortons. Tims is literally the bottom of the donut barrel -- just above pre-packaged Walmart ones.
That said, I still buy them. Donuts are in the same category as pizza, even if they aren't that good, they're still pretty good.

Mmmm... Safeway glazed croissant. Basically like taking a container of icing and eating it, except more socially acceptable.
I like the Tim's honey cruller, and some of their cookies, but agree the donuts are meh.

Safeway does have remarkably tasty donuts.

You are both correct, Safeway has some good donuts.
That being said, I am partial to:

The ones filled with whipped cream are delicious. They also have a monster-sized eclair. It took a few days to eat. I could have shared it with my family, but.. meh.

I find both Safeway and Superstore to be hit and miss. Superstore when good is miles ahead of Safeway; whereas Safeway is a little more consistent.
Any suggestions for a good bakery for donuts (in Calgary)? Without getting into the "gourmet" donuts that are $3-5 each? Or should I start making weekly trips to Red Deer?

Jelly Modern all the way. I dont care how much they cost. Amazing.
But yes, safeway donuts are better than Timmys.
Any hope of Krispy Kreme returning to Calgary?

I bought a 6 pack of original glazed Krispy Kreme here in Virginia about 2 weeks ago because I have such fond memories of the Calgary location. What an utter disappointment. I ate one and threw the rest out.

Jelly Modern are way overhyped, price aside. One of the most underwhelming donuts I've ever had, and they've never impressed me since. Better than Timmy's, but they don't hold a candle to the Donut Mill.
But as New Year's guy said, even a bad donut is pretty good, and when someone brings free Jelly Moderns around? I wouldn't say no.
I'm with ken, looking for the illusive donut that is good, and not ridiculously priced with the excuse of 'gourmet.'

Jelly Modern has that amazing peanut butter cup one. I am drooling just thinking about them. They are kinda pricy though. Making me think a trip to Donut Mill might be a fun weekend thing to do.

The best donut I ever had was a donut with some type of icing with crushed pistachios on top with a pistachio cream in the middle.
I would kill everyone in this thread for that donut again.

I miss the donuts we'd get at school on Texas donut day, anyone know who made those in the 90s?
