One thought I just had was imagine McDavid, Crosby and MacKinnon on the same line and how they would do against a team from China. Would they score every time they're on the ice?

The way I'd see that game going is in typical Canadian fashion, they'd probably get 7 or 8 in the first period, maybe 2 in the second and then just dump the puck in at the blueline for the entire third period.

By that logic, it would’ve been better to humiliate the Soviets by not playing them in 1972.

China wins between 9-11 medals at the Winter Olympics.

If we (the West) don’t go, they’ll win way more, and propagandize those victories.

We don’t fight wars anymore, certainly not between major nuclear powers.

Beating them at sports on their own home soil in humiliating fashion is going to have to do.

True. Every result and every record from the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow is still haunted by an asterisk because 66 countries boycotted the games to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. When the U.S.S.R. and its satellites staged a counter-boycott of the 1984 Games in L.A., it was rightly viewed as an expression of pique and the rest of the world ignored it.

If a boycott is large enough and effective enough, it destroys the prestige value of the Olympics, and prestige is the principal reason why dictatorships want to host the Games in the first place. But it does have to be large to be effective. Few people would care if Canada boycotted the Beijing Winter Olympics all by itself. If 20 or 30 other participants joined the boycott (since the Winter Olympics include fewer countries than the Summer to begin with), the Chinese regime would lose a huge amount of face.

Oh IDK. Canada is a pretty big deal in winter olympics.

If nothing else, the hockey tournament would immediately have an asterisk.

But obviously a larger boycott would be a lot more effective.

It would also force the IOC to consider the possibility of boycotts when choosing a host country. They want that maximum audience after all.

Not going to happen, but it would have been nice.

If Australia won't boycott, who have been dealing with some even more intense BS from China and are not really a big player at the winter games, it's not a surprise that Canada didn't even consider it.
