If either can back out if things change, there is nothing wrong with that.

But many posters that they had already agreed to a deal that would make this deal look much better. My point was simply that such a deal could never be binding.

Not officially binding until officially signed, no. But handshake deals happen often enough that if a team or player went back on it, that would not be a good look for them.

An example would be Kevin Labanc. After a 56 point season, he signed a one year contract with 1 million dollars, which is ridiculous. But San Jose was in cap trouble, and the rumour was they would make it up to him a year later.

The next season he falls to 33 points in 70 games, but San Jose still signs him to a 4-year deal with a 4.725 cap hit. They wouldn't have done it based on the year he had, but it gave further credence to the fact that they were fulfilling something they had agreed to the year before.

I believe the lowest value year can't be less than 50% of the highest value year.

Hopefully someone is working to confirm!

yes. Also the difference between two years can't be higher than 35% of the first year's salary.

If there is no penalty, then why even mandate a minimum number of preseason games?

Honestly, I always thought preseason games were just a way for teams/league to make some extra money on the side. I don't think they are really that valuable. It almost seems dumb to risk injuring players in them.

LOL how does that happen? Surely the NHL is paying some people to pay attention to stuff like this?

The topic at hand isn't about how many vets they need to play in a preseason game. NHL teams were supposed to schedule 6-8 total games, and the Canes only had 4 games.

My mistake I read it wrong...general theme applies

It's even worse actually...wish Flames played less and didn't risk suspension or injury

I don't know if the Habs were involved, but even if they weren't I'm going to pretend that they were...
