Klimkait, the Gold medal favorite, loses in the semi's after receiving her 3rd penalty.

That's a tough one

Jessica Klimkait wins Bronze in Women's 57kg Judo.

Obviously disappointed she missed out on Gold, but strong mentally to still walk away with a medal!

Updated Medal Count: Gold: 1 Silver: 2 Bronze: 1

*Blink and you'll miss it*

Arthur Margelidon loses 32 seconds into his Bronze medal match

Canadian men remain without a medal

Canada dropped the opener in Women’s Basketball 72-68 to Serbia.

Still baffled by some of it. Klimkait's penalty for example. As best I could tell they were usually enforced for inaction/lack of aggression yet the commentators made it seem like she was much more aggressive in golden score and it also seemed like an accidental slip which I didn't think was score/penalty worthy. I'm sure there's subtilties that I missed in my fatigue but seemed like a cheap win for her opponent.

China have lost a table tennis match. Japan wins the mixed doubles.
This is the first time China has not won gold or lost to a non-Chinese opponent since Athens!

I'm not sure how many different types of penalties there are, but I somewhat understood 2:

1) inaction, as you said. The commentators said something along the lines of the penalty occurring after either like a minute of no attacks or an x amount of consecutive attacks from the opposing player (Klimkait enforced this penalty on her opponents multiple times because of how aggressive she was)

2) dropping to your knees (or maybe it was having both elbows on the floor?) on a non-attack/false attack: this is what made Klimkait lose in the semi's, as she dropped to her knees to enforce a reset but hadn't done so while making an attack

The scoring seems really subjective. Is a throw good enough for 1 point? is it good enough for 2 points? Is it good enough for automatic win? Then when they are on the ground, at what point does the ref determine nothing is happening and order a reset? And as you mentioned, what is a penalty?

In contrast, Taekwondo is easy to understand, kicks and punch score points.

Dropping your opponent on their shoulder = 1 point

Dropping your opponent on their back = 10 points + automatic win

If both elbows are on the floor, it's a reset

I think. Lol

Think you're right here but it just seemed so cheap to lose that way. Her opponent was completely gassed, looked like she hurt her knee and took two inaction penalties in golden time (then lost by ippon in the final). I guess that's judo but man it sucked to see that.

To me at least taekwondo scoring is hard to figure haha. I believe it is electronic and I saw numerous what I thought were scoring trunk kicks but I guess not.

Fencing and Taekwondo are both really hard for me to follow for scoring. I tried watching some fencing last night and without a commentator on CBC's web feed it was pretty much impossible.

Fencing is a bunch of people yelling and claiming to get the touch even if you can't see it.

Men's 7's off to a rough start.

Drawing GB and Fiji doesn't help.

They played well against Fiji, scoring a nice team try and a nice individual skill try.

Had they played like that earlier they may have beating GB.
