I was one of those in the camp for Iginla over Jagr, but that was for purely sentimental reasons. I am glad that the Flames opted for Jagr, though I still hold on to the hope that Iggy comes back for his swan song.

. I think Iginla will try and cherry-pick a contender when he sees where teams are at. If any team wants him at that point, is another story.

Tom Renney was on the radio a few weeks ago and said that Hockey Canada would only consider Iginla for the Olympic team if he was playing games beforehand. Iginla is still recovering from surgery, so it seems likely a foregone conclusion based on this condition that the Olympics will not be a realistic option for him.

Now I had not ever heard it was either racial, nor oriented towards his family. Nor that it came from Versteeg.

Yep. As mentioned, Gaskal is way off on this.
Worth mentioning: Versteeg was teammates with Byfuglien at the time. I HIGHLY doubt anybody was saying anything racist as a result.
Here's the clip being mentioned.
https://streamable.com/ujb23
Iggy is yelling at Bolland. Versteeg isn't even in the picture. It's Bolland, Seabrook, Byfuglien, Sharp, Ladd, and Keith. Pierre also mentions that Burish is the one that's been going at Iginla. The play ends with Versteeg serving Eager's penalty from the play before.
The game ends with this scrum, with Iggy going after Burish.
https://streamable.com/iugkz
Versteeg is still in the penalty box. Pierre says "Iginla wants Burish. That's who he wants, he's gone right after him." and that "Jarome Iginla has taken a verbal abusing I've never seen a star player take".
Literally no involvement by Versteeg in these segments. Pretty bad form to make a claim that anybody was hurling racist comments when you don't have anything to back it up.

Iggy in his prime was unplayable. Just fantastic.

Gah, watching those clips gets me so steamed. I almost forgot how much I hated that Hawks team.

I thought it was Eager who was mouthing OFF along with Perry and someone else.
The following year Iginla fought this player at the opening face-off.
It was the blackhawks whole bench telling Iginla he was told, slow and past his prime......I remember this well what was said and his response .....just cannot remember who it was.....looked up hockey fights Nd actually believe it was Brouwer.

Iginla and Brouwer in the same room would be interesting...no love lost between those two over the years.
Funny as back then in his Blachawks Brouwer, now a Flames assistant captain praised for his leadership, work ethic, and off-ice intangibles, who was always all over Iginla for trying too hard in games, taking the regular season seriously, trying to be a hero, etc.
That said they are hockey guys so would probably get over it in about 30 seconds, as would Versteeg and Iginla.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Bennett-Jankowski-Jagr
Versteeg-Lazar-Iginla
Brouwer/Stajan
Come on Burke he's not taking icetime/opportunity away from a youngster..
Edit: I suppose, in theory Burke is correct, it would take away a "job" from F. Hamilton but GG even said "he needs to play."

Brouwer moves out of the organization.

I have to admit, watching Iginla in those links above really makes me nostalgic. I definitely think that almost any team can add a vet like him and he can do a lot to help show other players how to be a professional. What a warrior he was.

Heard from so many people yesterday during the game saying how nice it would be to have a heavy shot for the powerplay that could hit the net. Iginla would slot in perfectly for that.

He's still a hell of a lot better as an option on the point than Versteeg.

Also, man I loved that Flames team. Without some key injuries, they would have beaten the Hawks. If Gio didn't go down mid season, that would have been his take off and it was Phaneuf's best year ever. I know it's popular to hate on Keenan, but that team was a beauty with him at the helm. Could have been a special one.

I was definitely in the group that wanted Iggy to come back. I flip flopped between him or Jagr when it came to who I wanted the Flames to sign but I definitely wanted another top 9 winger and those were the best 2 out there.
I am happy the Flames went with Jagr and think he is the better fit and player. If Iggy sticks in the NHL I don’t care where as long as it is not Edmonton.
