I find it incredibly hard to believe that Nenshi could be openly gay without Craig Chandler telling us about it.

Does Mr. Nenshi listen to Tegan and Sara?

The guy reads the news for a living. What would he know about what it takes to make a good mayor??

Nenshi- maybe he is left leaning but the thing that drew me to him is that he seems like a thinker rather than a policy hack. So if something comes up, seems like he will investigate before making a decision based on his blanket ideas.
I care less about left-right in civic politics than D Sutter cares what Calgarypuck thinks about how to run a hockey team.
At this level, it's all about ideas and how to solve problems.

What do you do for a living that makes you qualified to say if he knows about being a good mayor?
Seriously, if you think he isn't qualified to give him opinion, why should you or anyone else who voted be qualified to make that choice? Maybe we should just have the mayor appointed by a committee of people who have the specific knowledge of what it takes to be a good mayor and leave the stupid public out of these important decisions.
Oh wait, that reminds me of something...

Oh come on, now. You didn't see the parallel to Barb? I'm just mimicking the Nenshi-ites on here.

I believe the correct term is Nenjas.
Anyways, he's qualified to give an opinion, he's just not qualified for the job. Just like Barb!

The only public service job that old newscasters are qualified for is Governor General.

I could not agree more. Calgary was not progressive, we just voted for the best candidate.

Maybe that is what makes us progressive...
We don't get all wound up with special interests, minority quotas, etc. We just vote for the what we think is best.

first obama, now nenshi
if the USA can elect a black president, "redneck calgary" can have a brown mayor...simple as that, doesn't matter what he is, it matters who he is and what he represents and will stand for/do
kinda crazy though Klein to Nenshi....times have changed

That's pretty much exactly what happened to my sister-in-law's folks. I only remember that after reading your post.

Based on my informal poll of my friends who voted Nenshi...it would have mattered. It's probably a good thing he didn't come out before the election. It wouldn't have stopped me from voting for him but I definitely know of a few votes that would have gone somewhere else if he had come out/was outed as a gay man beforehand.
