2 different fights during the same line brawl...it was rare but it did happen a few times in those days.

Risebrough was good but he was just an early version of Joe Colborne

I don't think they're similar at all. Riser was aggressive, a battler. Look at the difference in penalty minutes. Riser scored more goals and points as well.
If Colborne was a modern version of Risebrough he'd still be with the team and playing a big role.

Voted Bure, but should've gone with Riser in retrospect.

It was just a joke...in the past this board would compare someone to Colborne, "he's just a younger, faster better scoring Colborne.
Riser was awesome, the best thing about Bure was his wife.

With all due respect to Denis Cyr, I think we can safely skip #9, no?

Why?
Members have added interesting comments and stories about players. Why should McDonald be skipped of any such remembrance?

The legendary fight between Dougie Risebrough & Marty McSorley probably rates #1 in the list of famous battle of Alberta games against the Oilers. Not for the fight but the incident in the penalty box.
Quote:
What happened next lives on in Flames' annals and for many represents the fabled Battle of Alberta at its apex.
"Knowing (McSorley's) reputation,'' says Risebrough, "I'm figuring I better get the first one in 'cause it might be the last one.
"Anyway, I get the first one in and then it's pushing, shoving, throwing punches. He was the first guy to figure out that at the time we didn't have to tie down the jersey - now it's a rule.
"So he'd literally kinda put his head down, you'd end up with his sweater, you had nothing to hold onto and then he could really wallop you.
"But I figured I did OK in the fight."
The scuffle over, an incensed Risebrough grabbed the discarded No. 33 in white, hauled it into the penalty box and began to shred it with his skates.
"I throw it on the floor, and start cutting it up. And I'm thinking 'Gee, I didn't do a very good job, I don't see any marks.' Well, when I held it up, the light comes through it and I'm thinking 'Holy s--!'
"Well, I give it to the guy in the box, he tosses it to (McSorley) and he goes ballistic."
Following the game, in high dudgeon, Oiler coach/GM Glen Sather demanded reparation for the tattered item in the form of $225.
"The next morning,'' says Risebrough, "I call Glen - we're friends - to apologize: 'I don't know what happened. I had a brain cramp.' And he starts to laugh.

Risebrough was winner. When you talk intangibles, he had them all. He was as fiesty a player to have every played in the NHL and was the Flames captain for a reason.
Bure had one or two years when he was pretty good at scoring for a bad team who didn't make the playoffs. He had no grit and was not the kind of player who winning teams build around.
Risebrough totally was.

I'm not sure that was the case. The Flames went through some pretty dark times just before everything turned around after their longest losing streak at the time. IMO, the day Fletcher started trading with the Blues to first get Joey Mullen, that was the day the Flames started heading down the path of glory. MacDonald and Risebrough provided leadership earlier on, but Risebrough was probably there as an inspiration for his glory days with the Montreal Canadiens dynasty that won 4 cups in the late 70's. Maybe the first 2-3 years as a Flames, Risebrough was ok and provided leadership. But as the Flames sunk to new lows and started building with the right players towards 85-89, Risebrough's leadership role went to McD, Hunter, and Peplinski. Guess Fletcher was grooming him for management, which was a bad mistake! Risebrough's pretty dead to me after what he did to the Flames. Plus, I think Bure was a way better player.
