Joel Waterman has been sold to the Montreal Impact, BTSVancity has learned.
The 6’2” centre back is close to reaching an agreement with the MLS-side, multiple sources have indicated to BTS, which would mark another landmark move for the Canadian Premier League.

Wow, that’s massive. Huge for Cavalry and the league! But a huge hit for the Cavs as they go into next season. Great work that they re-signed him so they can get a transfer fee
Congrats Joel, there’s only 1 first transfer! We’ll always have fond memories of the smooth ball playing CB

Good on Water, but still there's a couple fellas on EMFC that can fill the hole.

I DM'd Waterman last week when the rumours first broke again and he wouldn't say one way or the other. Either way, selling a player to MLS is a big deal, as it helps the sustainability of the club.

Do we know how the transfers work? Does the club keep the money or does it filter through the league?

Waterman is listed on the Impact's training camp roster, so, I guess that's it? The transfer fee being floated around is $100k, which IMO is not a bad piece of business for a player who isn't a guaranteed starter on a fully healthy Cavalry squad.

It’s sad to see him go, but $100k for a player who was an infrequent starter is good business for a young team. I just hope these sorts of deals act as a financial springboard for the league and we see that cap double or triple in the next few years.
Bit disappointed how radio silent the team has been. No comment on Waterman, no comment on Cordova, no media interaction, no rumours.

Surprising considering that the Cavalry only have 13 players confirmed. 14 if the Jair Cordova rumours are true.

Just because only 13 players are announced doesn't mean there are only 13 players signed. CPL clubs seem to be trying to maximize publicity via trickling out information. I don't think it's working.

Fair point. Kick off is in 4 months. Just release the roster, the jerseys, then the schedule. The hype will build itself from there.

I wonder if the Ottawa rumours are the reason why the new kits haven’t been released yet. Not surprised they missed the holiday season though, that felt very ambitious.
Making announcements weeks after the other club in a transfer deal does isn’t a good look and doesn’t build hype. Also, if Cavalry (and others) have more players locked up, they should be announcing it... last thing you want is a Valour situation where your fans think the team is facing a mass exodus (rightly or wrongly)

I'll put my tinfoil hat on. Maybe if Ottawa will be a team for 2020, there will need to be an expansion draft, and teams are not announcing a part of their roster, because some players will be soon to be departed.

Interesting thought, but soccer is a bit different than hockey with the depth of players available worldwide on a moments notice during transfer windows. I highly doubt an expansion draft would occur in CanPL. A hypothetical Ottawa team would quickly pick up as many former Fury players as possible and then fill their ranks with international free agents and L1 Ontario players.

The rumour floating around is that many of the Fury players from last year are not signing elsewhere as they think Ottawa may be in CPL in 2020. Only 4 players from last year's team have been announced for other clubs.

Is there a downside to Ottawa joining so soon? Even if the team is terrible, their revival will make fans more passionate then they ever were.

Someone on reddit brought up a good point. With the season being split. What's stopping Ottawa from joining in the Fall Season?

Provided that the venue is available, I’d say fairly limited downside. Merchandise might be slow to arrive, season ticket sales might be hectic, confusion might alienate some fans.... but the upside is probably greater (availability of players, positive hype from resurrecting pro soccer in Ottawa, growing league, etc.)
