Default The A.I. Thread

It seems like we should expect more and more A.I. stories every day and so I thought I would open up a massive thread.

Anyway, Microsoft created A.I. that wants genocide on Mexicans.....

For those who understand these things, this is much different then the Montreal Canadians incident isn't it? In that case the bot was simply re-tweeting pictures with other peoples Twitter Handles in it, in this case, it seems that the bot was actually developing it's own unique responses based on other conversations.

Actually it sounds like it is similar to the Canadiens incident. The Tay tweet bot was programmed to learn from the language people tweeted to it. When they tweeted a bunch of racist BS to the account it tweeted the same racist garbage to the world.

Deep Learning Is Going to Teach Us All the Lesson of Our Lives: Jobs Are for Machines

Quote:
Any time now. That’s the new go-to response in the 21st century for any question involving something new machines can do better than humans, and we need to try to wrap our heads around it.

We need to recognize what it means for exponential technological change to be entering the labor market space for nonroutine jobs for the first time ever. Machines that can learn mean nothing humans do as a job is uniquely safe anymore. From hamburgers to healthcare, machines can be created to successfully perform such tasks with no need or less need for humans, and at lower costs than humans.

Amelia is just one AI out there currently being beta-tested in companies right now. Created by IPsoft over the past 16 years, she’s learned how to perform the work of call center employees. She can learn in seconds what takes us months, and she can do it in 20 languages. Because she’s able to learn, she’s able to do more over time. In one company putting her through the paces, she successfully handled one of every ten calls in the first week, and by the end of the second month, she could resolve six of ten calls. Because of this, it’s been estimated that she can put 250 million people out of a job, worldwide.

Not very "intelligent" then, is it? This doesn't seam much better than the programs I used to play with 20 years ago. Good progress MS!

Honestly, there is so much hype surrounding AI at this current stage, that must be evidence of an investment bubble.

One in every ten successfully resolved in the first month? That's 1 better than I've received from any human call centre in all of time

Anyone who compares deep neural networks to pared-down virtual brains is talking out of his butt.

It was partially like the Canadiens situation as well. You could tell the bot to "repeat after me" and it would parrot whatever you wanted. But it also learned and adapted, and when 4chan got ahold of it, it was done.

For a teenager, "Tay" was very interested in politics though:

I think a major oversight was using twitter as its base for learning. Not the most sophisticated information base. In a sense, Tay becomes of a mirror of twitter's output, though a very biased one.

The other issue is that Tay doesn't have concepts of morality, emotions, and reasoning that humans do. No filter, or no way to distinguish what is "good" or not. This is why my kids, who are being raised in a social media world, still seem normal

You could argue, however, that given enough time and enough input, it can determine what is deemed socially acceptable and not, and thus have its own concept of goodness.

Yes we all know how you feel about AI, this is probably just a thread you should steer clear of.

Why do you have such strong feelings about AI?

Is is the beauty and uniqueness of the human mind as it has evolved over millions of years?

Maybe if we taught them Christianity, they'd become more moral and kind.

That would be correct. I also feel that we devalue our own capabilities to prop up the capabilities of, to this point, machine brute force learning.

How is it devaluing our own capabilities? Are we not their creators? For one who believes in a God of creation, does our development of AI not bring us one step closer to our creator?
