All 3 of mine are on the upstairs hall lights circuit. I ran in the same same issue when I was replacing my detectors with Nest Protects.
I made sure to use a voltage detector just to be safe as well.

Funny story, when we bought our house a few years ago it wasn't bolted in either. First thing I did after we moved in was added them.

How does that pass inspection? When I had an inspector out for my garage, he was very thorough. He even caught a couple joist hangers that had a missing nail. He wouldn't have missed something that obvious.

I have no idea. The home inspector didn't sound overly surprised when he mentioned it though.

No idea. Our house is also 10 years old, not sure what inspections were like at that time.

What's the best way to attach a 2x4 to a wall covered in vinyl siding? I moved my fence and the new gate needs to latch against the garage, which is covered in vinyl siding. The gate will swing from a proper fence post and the latch needs to be on the garage side. I couldn't put a post on the latch side because of an existing concrete path.
Option 1: cut a vertical strip of vinyl siding out, screw 2x4 onto the garage, and try to reseal with silicone.
Option 2: Screw the 2x4 right onto the garage without any prep and spread the pressure across many vinyl 'planks'
Option 3: something better that I didn't think of?

Do you need the 2x4? Can you just use long screws to attach the latch directly through the siding into the framing?

Otherwise I can't think of a good way to do it, other than taking the vinyl corner off and using a 2x4 or lp smart trim.

If you have to cut the siding out its easy enough to slide some j-channel in to give it a finished look. siding is plyable enough and there is a simple tool for spliting the individual siding pieces so you can nail the j and pop everything back together.
If you lag right through the siding will be distorted and might pop in the freeze thaw. I would make a couple of standoffs out of smaller 2x4, then lag through. less intrusive and should still be solid.

I like the idea of using smaller standoffs. Would you cut the siding to accommodate those or drop them right on top of the siding?
