^ Yeah, to paint everyone with the same brush is silly. This rumour is not a recurring thing that we know of, and players have been outspoken about their great family life experience here. Not everyone wants to go to a chaotic, densely populated urban metropolis. In fact it might not even be a majority that prefer that. Younger guys that haven't settled down yet? Sure, might have appeal. For a lot of players they probably like the idea of a smaller market with a passionate fanbase.

Maybe, but Winnipeg's situation is quite a bit different than Calgary's. The small size of the MTS Centre sets a hard limit on the amount of revenue the Jets can generate, and as a result they have always operated under an internal salary limit well below the NHL salary cap. The other Canadian markets are not bound by the same constraints.

But these markets, namely the smaller Canadian markets, rarely land any big fish. Unless you take Lucic situations where the money is hilarious.

The evidence doesn't really back this statement.

Neal was a top three "big fish" last summer.

Even with how it has turned out so far, which most probably didn't see coming.

I highly suspect all 7 Canadian teams (and not just the "small markets") are on many NTCs for a few reasons:

- Higher tax (It's no secret that the Alberta teams had the best chance of attracting free agents back when the tax rate was 39% vs. 48%. Most US jurisdictions are under 50% tax, except some NY and CA teams, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec are all over 50%. Tennessee and Texas are around 35%).
- High media exposure/scrutiny
- Lack of anonymity
- Lack of Championships in recent years
- Lifestyle (Toronto, Montreal and maybe Vancouver less so, but none compare to NYC or LA)
- Language (Montreal only)
- Non Canadian players preferring US over Canada generally

Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and to a lesser extent Calgary might have exception cases (arguably in that order), but I've heard when players have NTCs, its generally Canada (up to all 7), Buffalo, and some mix of Arizona, Columbus, Minnesota and Carolina.

"I gave you my soul" is a just little over the top for wording.

Enjoy suiting up in poop-maroon.

lol. One player nixes a trade to Calgary, and suddenly we're a deserted wasteland that no one wants any part of.

Good grief.

yeah the Flames have signed a ton of high-end UFAs... Neal, Frolik, and Brouwer were all at least top-10 in their respective classes

JG was 5th in MVP voting yet gets absolutely trashed on the teams social media pages.

Even if some of these guys want to be the Wilt Chamberlain of hockey, they can probably do that just as easily in Calgary as they can in NY or LA.
I were a pro player I wouldn't want to be in Canada, given the choice.
it would be preferable to go about your daily life without the constant scrutiny. fan bases are just a little too rabid in Canada.

sure you can get laid or dunk just as easily in Calgary as New York, but you're not anonymous in Calgary.

NHL players who get suspensions in the playoffs two years in a row have no souls.

Mike Smith is married but can reportedly dunk.

I assume Edmonton has basketball nets.

It would be very interesting to know what their other offers looked like.

Hopefully this allows Treliving to use Brodie to acquire a scoring RW.

Nazem Kadri blocked me on Twitter a few years ago for calling him out when he went after Gaudreau and then turtled against heavy-weight enforcer Josh Jooris. So for that I’m glad he’s not here.

I'm guessing it's as simple as Kadri doesn't want to be in another high pressure Canadian market. He wasn't always great at handling the added pressure in Toronto.

There's positive aspects to playing in Calgary over other cities, and we're definitely not as bad as Edmonton, Winnipeg, or Ottawa but on the balance most players will not want to come here. You can either accept that as an additional challenge and try to work around it like I feel BT has, or you can cry about it and use it as an excuse like Oiler brass has done time and again. But it's there, and very real. Calgary is a small market, it's isolated, it's cold, and those factors aren't going to be balanced out by having a passionate fanbase or being close to the mountains for most players especially when you compare it to the premiere cities on this continent that have teams. For Kadri as a native Torontonian going from there to here is like us going from here to Sudbury or St. John's.
