The Knights, holding down the final playoff spot didn’t play tonight so they are still eight points up on the Flames but now have a game in hand.
|
Knights played and won. Not that it really matters.

Miromanov had a pretty good game. I'd like to see him speed up those passes a lot, as his teammates seem to be waiting for picks often. He's a pretty steady guy out there though and I like that he wants to be a difference maker.
The Flames really need Zary back. It's just more fun to watch with his creativity.

Does anyone else think Coronato would be better served playing with the Wranglers?
I get that you still have to ice a team, and with the late scratches, he was probably needed to fill the roster, but he didn't look good tonight.
Have to think he's better off playing big minutes in the AHL.

I definitely would, but I would also like him to get some time on PK1 with the Wranglers, to round out his defensive game.

The playoffstatus model is pretty generous to the Flames, only dropping them 2% to 14%.
The 8th seed is now up to 69% (Vegas).
And the hurdle keeps rising, with Nashville on pace for 97 points, and any team catching needing 98.
Calgary would have to go 15-1-1 to get there (.912).
Draft wise the Flames are a loss away from a virtual tie with three other teams for the 8th overall pick.

We should invert this and see what record we need in order to attain a top 10 draft pick.

Mentally I wasn't quite ready for them to be this bad, this quick. Will be interesting to see how certain players handle it.
The best thing for the franchise's future is probably to bring a similar lineup into next year and gather a high pick. Easier said than done.

I think it’s a bit of a timing thing in part
They have been pretty brutal for the most part the last 8 periods
But I think they are in the middle of a particularly tough stretch of opponents to be facing right when you hit the wall
It will be interesting to see where they level out

With all the changes to lines and D-pairings, it’s no wonder the team is out of sync. That’s saying nothing about the quality of the UFAs shipped out.

Said it in the game story last night ... I don't see it as a lack of effort. They're likely out of sorts with all the new combinations and emotionally spent from the chaos, but they're trying.
Some bullets dodged ... UFAs not signed, nobody got hurt.
Next hurdle is a smart July 1st. Don't sign any damaging contracts to push the team up five spots and still miss the playoffs.

That's a much harder call, because you have to do worse than some bad teams that were also sellers at the deadline.
I'm still figuring the most likely finish for this team would have them picking 8th before the lottery. Buffalo, New Jersey, and Pittsburgh should all pass them before the end of the season; though you never can tell with Pittsburgh, where the team went to pieces so fast, people got hit by the shrapnel.

It was an unfortunate post TDL schedule. Two afternoon games BTB against cup contenders the day after the TDL. Followed by travel and a game against another cup contender who just got an important player back. With three important regulars including the starter out of the lineup.

Current 10th pick - Pittsburgh .508 win% - Projected 83 points
Flames to pass Pittsburgh, 7-9-1 .441 pace

It is funny if that is the right word because I expected them to fall apart numerous times this season. Didn't really care because I wrote them off before the season began and was just hoping the young guys would get the chance Conroy promised. Felt it would be great to see a young team and also felt they would get killed. Happened a whole lot later than expected which is good. Now they can plunge as far as possible without too much confidence damage.

I find it tough.
I like the direction, but the games are tough to watch. I used to just hone in on every detail game to game, and now I find myself thinking of work, or emptying the dishwasher etc.
Won't be fun next year.
The team was plucky from Nov - Feb and fun to watch.

Well, you never know. Don't think any of us expected 2014/15 to be a fun season, but then the Flames knocked the Canucks out of round 1.
