Of course he was. Kylington can never do good in your eyes because you have a bias towards him.

You have to wonder if burnout is becoming an issue. They've played a lot of hockey in a very condensed schedule. They don't have 2 nights off in between games for another 6 games. It's slightly worrying and hopefully it doesn't become a major issue for this team.

I think his upside is a top pairing offensive D.
Tonight, he was terrible.

Kylington played 20 minutes and was a plus player. He wasn't the problem tonight.
55 4 44 and 16 were.

Then, no doubt, they will have some stupid extended break that takes the edge off of them completely.

I’m not happy about the Olympic break. Don’t see much good coming out of it for this team. Watch the wheels fall off after. Not that that has ever happened before.

Oliver had a rough night, to be certain. I'm in agreement with timbit on this one.

How were 55 and 4 a problem?
Had the highest xGF among our dmen, only goal against they were on for was the empty net goal.
Kylington didn’t have a great night, and was really fighting the puck in the third.
Bottom pair and goaltending were the real issue though.

Could've been much better defensemen-wise 5v5, but overall was a great game 5v5.
Special teams did them in.
The Kings & especially the Knights completely dominated 5v5 play against the Flames. Against the Ducks, the Flames weren't horrible, but they were nowhere near their dominant selves and were overall outplayed 5v5.
Hard to have any concern with this game. Almost zero chance the entire defense has as bad a game as this individually as the majority of them did tonight, a game in which they still controlled play by a large margin outside of a horrible stretch in the 2nd.

What you're missing in your analysis is the aggregate level of play. Underlying numbers only show how much better a team was relative to its opposition.
The Kings brought a really high level of play to their game against us. That should have been expected from that core of Kopitar, Danault, and Doughty, coached by MacLellan. Yes we won because we were the better finishing team, but the Flames didn't play poorly. They played a solid road game, which was pretty even for two periods. And then score effects took over and they didn't play well with a 3-1 and then 3-2 lead.
The Ducks also brought a really high level of play to their game against us. Eakins really made a concious effort to exploit his home ice advantage and target our third pair in particular. Regardless - the Flames won the score-adjusted underlying numbers in that game.
The Vegas game, no need to rehash that.
Tonight, the Flames were simultaneously better than the Sharks 5v5, and awful 5v5. Mutually exclusive.

Pretty sure I saw Hanifin getting burned on the Erik Karlsson goal... but maybe I didn't see it correctly.

Carolina next will be a big challenge, but an Eastern team, bring 'em on!

Hanifin was asleep on the Erik Karlsson goal. He looked bad all road trip. Rasmus was making bad decisions all night.

Thought Monahan had a good game and their whole line did well. Happy with Ruzicka's game, as well. Relative to expectations, the Backlund line was the worst.
Sure wish Hanifin could somehow trick himself into thinking every Flames' game was being played in Boston.

Backlund’s line looked bad the other night without Coleman (who improved Monahan’s line a lot), so I thought they’d bounce back tonight. But they didn’t.
I think Lucic - Monahan - Dube could work, especially if Dube quits painting himself into corners.

Flames “back down to earth” after losing two road games by a bee’s dick after playing a LOT of road hockey. They’re first in the pacific, 2nd in the west, best goal differential in the league. Hot take in the OP
If they keep playing this way through the season, add a second line forward at the deadline and they’re a cup contender.

The other thing is that the fancy stats reflect the whole game, and for sure the Flames were better for the first 35 minutes and then the last period when they were pressing. But that 15 minutes in the second - not good.

I wonder if Kylington's sub-par game was due to some nagging injury, considering that he did not participate in the morning skate and was a game-time decision.

Special teams was the difference tonight.
0/3 on the PP
0/2 on the PK
We'll be better.
