60% possession with more shots and scoring chances
They certainly could have easily won it

2-2 on the road trip isn't terrible. Flames will be fine. I suspect the compressed schedule they've had to deal with so far is starting to grind on them a bit.

I think so too but he's the starter. Sit him out against Chicago next Monday.

Couldn't have asked them to play any better 5v5.
Half the defense struggled mightily and the goaltending was well below-average. Add to that going 0-3 on the PP & 0-2 on the PK, and there's the loss.
But 5v5 they dominated and outscored the Sharks, whereas they were killed 5v5 in the previous 3 games on the road trip.

I would agree since they scored less goals. Any time you do that you deserve to lose.
However I don’t think it’s as bad as people in the GT were making it out to be. They had a brutal 8 minutes in the 2nd that cost them. They clearly outplayed the Sharks in the 3rd but couldn’t score.
15-6-5 is a good record.

How did Looch miss that wide open net?

Yup. The defense had a veeeeery rough outing tonight. Zadorov, Gudbranson and Kylington especially.
Crazy that they were still overall dominant at 5v5 despite such struggles from half their defense.

Puck was on end after the pass from Dube, watching the replay. He fired it fast as there was a guy on him and another scrambling to cover the net. A foot over.

Kylington was really bad tonight. Too many bad bad mistakes. AHL level stuff. It never stops amazing me how easy it is to lose a game in NHL. They’ve had it wrapped up and ready for pickup. Incredible.

Could have asked them to play much better 5v5, to be honest. In all three zones.

Yes, special teams was the difference in the final score, but that's a far cry from "BY FAR their best game of the trip".
And the defense is part of the skaters group. Even the top four guys looked like they were fighting some illness or something. Or maybe the ice was just terrible.

The Sharks weren't good either.

Yeah, I slap this one on the defensemen almost entirely, and a generally weak game from Vladar.

Tough loss especially when you outshoot the opposition 43-27. These tougher teams like Vegas and the Sharks are going to show where the Flames need to improve.
I thought the D looked a little shaky at times tonight and Dube, although he had a goal, he doesn't make good decisions at times. He should have shot on the 2 on 1 with Monahan I believe it was and on the empty net with Lucic.
Not a bad game overall but blowing a 2 goal lead isn't something you like to see.
Couple of game photos from NHL.com.

This was one where the dominating possession stats didn’t match the play from the middle of the second IMO. I think it’s true that the Flames didn’t check as hard all over the ice and as a result the chances the Sharks got were more high quality. And the special teams, where possession stats aren’t a factor, were all in favour of the Sharks.

Flames in their 2 games vs San Jose this season (5v5):
- 60.46% xGF%
- 61.19% xGF%
0 points
Ouch

Pretty safe bet that Flames will not lose many games when being up up 3-1 with 25 minutes left in the game.
I attribute it to the mistakes from fatigue.

Me too and I really don't think Kylington was that bad.
We definitely could have won but when your defence has that bad of a game as well as your goalie I think it's naive to just look at possession and say we should have won.
Not like it was one or 2 defenceman. Literally 4 of the 6 had very bad games and probably Tanev is the only one who could say he was above average.

Lucic missing the empty net was hockey gods strike back for the cheesy shove on Pederson.
Flames were very good at times, but the mental lapses were shocking.

Shouldn't have Saif they couldn't have played "any better" at 5v5 tonight, as the defense was all over the place, but overall at 5v5 they dominated the Sharks and created far great chances, and actually won the 5v5 goal battle 3-2. Could've been much better defensemen-wise 5v5, but overall was a great game 5v5.
Special teams did them in.
The Kings & especially the Knights completely dominated 5v5 play against the Flames. Against the Ducks, the Flames weren't horrible, but they were nowhere near their dominant selves and were overall outplayed 5v5.
Hard to have any concern with this game. Almost zero chance the entire defense has as bad a game as this individually as the majority of them did tonight, a game in which they still controlled play by a large margin outside of a horrible stretch in the 2nd.

Confirms my suspicion. He was just short of awful.

Fatigue maybe. The mental game is the first to go when you’re a tired team.
2 PP goals for them, none for the Flames. That’s the difference there.
