There's no way Johnson gets a 5 year contract.

If he does, he can thank two people for that:
David Savard
Sergei Bobrovsky

Yeah - there is no way that contract ends up looking good but that is what a local Pittsburgh media person is reporting.
Unless it's some low $$$ ($2.5M per season) long term play that is a bad contract, and even then it's likely a bad contract.

That would be absolutely insane. Johnson has been a possession black hole for his entire career, but at least he put up points. Now he doesn't even do that. He is one of the worst defenders in the game.
If he gets a 5 year contract, it doesn't even matter how much the AAV, it will be one of the worst contracts in the league.

Yikes. 5 years at $3-3.5M for a guy who is a replacement level d-man at best right now.
Why give up so much term when Johnson and his BFF Crosby just want to play together.
Supposedly he was also offered a 7 year, $22M contract extension by Columbus last year...so two GMs were crazy enough to do it.

I think you answered your own question. Crosby is going to bat for Johnson and has considerable sway.

Meh, I'm happy for Jack Johnson. Hopefully he's free and clear of the debt brought on by his dirt bag parents and can actually bank some of this money for his future.

With the cap going up it really isn't that bad of the contract. Around 4 % of cap. I think that isn't bad at all.

All of a sudden, Jack Johnson sucks?? He doesn't, he's not the same he used to be, but he's still solid. I will agree that the term sucks, but the money is right. He's pretty much Michael Stone calibre, aka a number 4 guy.
I do agree that the contract isn't great because of term but the money isn't bad at all, especially if he can not decline at the end of the contract.

IIRC creditors were only going to get 10% of his next contract if it was over $4.5 mil / year. This is below that so it should all be his.

It's just a lot of term for a guy who was healthy scratched all 6 playoff games by Columbus and is at best an average d-man now.
Although Pittsburgh has seemed to have turned around other d-men in the past so maybe they can use some of their secrets again here.
The good news is if teams are offering 5 years and $3+ million to 31 year old Jack Johnson, then it shouldn't be that hard to trade 28 year old Michael Stone with 2 years and $3.5M left on his contract if the Flames decide that's the right move.

Neither Stone or Johnson are close to number 4 caliber players.
That is going to be a horrible contract in 2-3 years. Even next season. Johnson is just not a good D-man.

Or just keep Stone because he's a on a sweet deal and provides good defensive depth....

Terms for Smith-Pelley in Washington are 1 year and 1 million. Cheap.

Just to be clear, he has two years at $3.5 per year, not total. With a modified NTC.
