Wild acquire Bjugstad (50% retained) from the Pens for a conditional 7th round pick
Michael Russo @RussoHockey
#mnwild are acquiring former Minnesota Mr. Hockey and Gopher Nick Bjugstad from the #penguins.
Could be a conditional draft pick going the other way.
Bjugstad is hungry entering final year of his deal, coming off back surgery, but healthy. Pens retaining chunk of salary/cap
Michael Russo @RussoHockey
Conditional seventh-rounder is based on how many games Bjugstad plays next season, I believe.

Bjugstad really fell off a cliff (injuries?). He's a big body, and not very good. Surprised Pittsburgh was able to dump his cap for nothing - although it's likely Guerin taking a low-risk shot at a reclamation project.
Because ya know...he's big (and his underlying numbers did bounce back this season in all 13 games he played)

Pens retain and still only get a conditional 7th rounder.
Amazing how far Bjugstadt has fallen.

That's the way it works now - not the player but how the player performs relative to the cap hit.
He was a drag on Pit so they give him up free.
Wild get a guy who might be good as a reclamation, but if not, they only have for one year. Probably means Rask is getting bought out though.

I would have taken him in a Murray trade to bring down the acquisition cost.

That why this crazy talk about a first + for Murray or OEL is bizarre.
Salary and term cripples player trade value now more than ever.
Obviously Murray is RFA, but he will get both. As well, I understand that term on a good contract works the opposite way which is why when the + is a player like Hanafin I'm incredulous.

What would you pay for Murray and Bjugstadt?
A 7th and a 3rd and Pens retain another million?

Solid move for Minnesota, they badly needed help down the middle and Big Nick is a local who just never worked out for the Penguins. Think they did well here.

I dunno, if Bjugstadt is healthy this might turn out pretty good for the Wild. Big right shot C/RW for just $2 million and there is no long term risk with just one year left on his deal.

Wild acquire Bjugstad from the Pens for a conditional 7th round pick
Ugh, that jersey purchase I made years ago after his 24 goal season doesn’t look like the wisest purchase now.

The condition on the pick is that Bjugstad plays in 70 games or scores 35 points next season. Otherwise the pick does not transfer.

The pens traded Brassard, Sheahan, 2019 2nd, 2019 4th, 2019 4th for Bjugstad and McCann
Panthers flipped Brassard for a 3rd

This is a good gamble for the Wild. If Bjugstad is finally healthy again, he could bounce back and be a good trade chip at the deadline if they aren't in it.

Wow.
There was clearly ZERO market for Bjugstadt out there.
Retained 50% and all they get is a 7th round pick IF those conditions are met.
I doubt Pens fan are very happy. I remember reading many proposals where they figured they could get Bennett for Bjugstadt.

To be fair though, it's a different world than a year ago. Bjugstad was a decent player who had two 40 point seasons and when Pittsburgh first got him, he put up 14 points in 32 games.
Now? His year was decimated by injuries and he makes a lot of money in a flat-cap world. There's going to be a lot of teams looking to move bottom-sixers that make too much.

We probably see more of such deals with the cap staying flat.
