Colbert Replacing Letterman - Not As "Report" Character
http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/stephen-...host-1.2605608
Quote:
CBS Television has announced that Stephen Colbert, currently host of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, will be the new host of The Late Show after the departure of current host David Letterman.
Colbert signed a five-year agreement to take over the show once Letterman retired, CBS announced Thursday.

That's ok, meaty enough for it's own thread.
I dont like it. I mean it's obviously a step up for Colbert, but I enjoy him far more in polical satire than I can see a late night show working out. Plus I see TDS as CR as 'thinkier' shows than the late night cycle. There's enough of those already.
I guess the the Report doesn't suffer, than it's alright. But I can't see how it wouldn't.

I am thrilled for Colbert. He's a very intelligent person and should easily transition over even though people might not recognize him when he's not in character. I am sure he was pissed at the network for not backing him as strongly with the whole #cancelcolbert BS from last week and that likely led to his "availability" for this.
Can't wait for Jimmy VS Colbert in a year.

I disagree.
Colbert is talented, smart, creative and does great interviews. I think he's just about perfect for late night, although, I worry he may actually be too good for it. Most of the late night hosts have to dumb it down for their audiences.

The "Report" character has actually worn thin on me now.
He's a pretty funny guy, so it will be nice to see him doing something else for a change.

I recall he took over for Stewart just before leaving to do the Report, so he wasn't in character and I thought he was awesome.

I'm on the same page. I think the whole late night format is played out, and Colbert is too good for it. I'm curious to see what persona he brings to the role though, and hope he brings his own writers with him rather than relying on the usual late night weak sauce.
Does this mean the death of the Report?

The real loser is Comedy Central because they lost John Oliver (HBO made a Daily Show type program from him) when they weren't able to create a show for him.
With the end of the Colbert Report, it would have been a great slot for a John Oliver show.

Fallon is doing a good job of making the Tonight Show more in the vein of the old variety shows with an emphasis on comedy bits or musical bits that make good social media clips. Does that translate to bringing viewers to the actual show to raise ratings for television advertisers? I don't know. Most younger people probably just watch the clips on the Youtube channel.
The Report is dead.

His interviews with bands are the best I have seen. You can tell they enjoy talking to him, because he does not ask cliche questions.

The best, most intelligent comedian out there. It will be interesting to see how he does out of the conservative character, but he has the talent to pull it off I think.

John Oliver and his fake british accent is the reason why i stopped watching the Daily Show. No loss there.

You stopped watching the Daily Show because of a British comedian with a British accent who was like, 10% of the runtime of any given episode?
You're a weird dude.

True, but we'll see if it continues out of character. When you watch those interviews, the whole basis of those band interviews is that he asks them outrageous questions in a mocking style based on his character. That's why the bands crack up and love it; They're in on it with Stephen, basically making fun of other interviews and the media.
He likely won't have that ace up his sleeve in a Late Show format, and will go to a more traditional interview style. Not saying he won't still be good, but those interviews put artists guards down directly because of the mock character. They were comedy interviews.

I don't like this. Mostly because I love the Colbert Report and just recently started getting back into it again. He'll be good anywhere he goes. Guy is just entertaining. I don't think he need's to have the uber-conservative shtick to stick to his sarcastic brand of humour. Miles ahead of Letterman regardless. God is that guy boring.
Hopefully one of the Daily Show correspondants can make a play for their own follow up show. I mentioned in the other thread I'd like to see Asif Mandvi or Jason Jones take over.

I think Dave gave up a long time ago, and has been mostly mailing it in for years.
He hasn't seemed happy to be there for some time.
