Flames @ Oilers. 7pm MT flames.nhl.com
Flames and Oilers will be streaming the game on their website. Looks like Flames are sending a group more veteran that previously thought

Makes for a better game.
Backup goalie, top line, of of the top two defense pairings.
That's 7 guaranteed regulars.

Tomorrow is a day off for the Flames, so yeah expect cuts. I wouldn't be surprised to see if all of Group 3 is cut and sent to the Wranglers.
Should be only 2 groups after tomorrow. They may try to send a few players through waivers tomorrow as well.

It's interesting but I think the veteran rule has pretty much ruined pre season hockey, not that pre season hockey was ever something to write home about.
Every game has a lopsided roster resulting in a talented team going through the motions and an untalented team having little chance to generate any kind of flow or entertaining play.
We used to kick off the preseason with all rookie lineups and with that you had prospects filling the net and generating excitement.
In cities like Edmonton they'd start penciling the players in based on those early pre seasons, while in Calgary we'd hear "its early" and "wait until the big boys start playing"
But at least in those days you'd have guys popping, adding confidence, and progressing through camp creating head lines.
What chance does say Connor Zary or Adam Ruzicka have tonight against a veteran Oilers squad? How can a guy like Juuso Valimaki settle down his nerves when his three games to date will have come against a veteran Vancouver, a veteran Seattle and a veteran Oilers team? If anyone needed a nice quiet game against a lesser roster it was that guy.
Rant over.

If Valimaki can't settle down his game against NHL players, he should probably not be in the NHL. Seems fine to me?

In a black and white world yeah.
But in a world where young hockey players go through two huge injuries, miss a lot of time, get on the wrong side of a new tough as nails coach and struggle with confidence it would be better to start with baby steps and see if it grows vs drinking from the garden hose.

You just know that Oilers fans are going to play this up to be more than it actually is.

Cole Schwindt has received praise from Sutter one of the few prospects that has so far, I wonder if he has a real chance to make the team as he probably is better equipped to play in a bottom line role.

Totally agree. Not sure what has been accomplished. One player with a chance to make the team can't show much when his line mates don't have the skill to make it. Looks to me like they're showcasing some of the opposition vets at the expense of the rookies. Games have basically been boring. Should have been down to two groups before the exhibitions games began.

Happy they are trying Zary on the wing I think he has been the best player out of potential last top 9 players, definitely most skilled. In his interview yesterday he said he really focused on his skating over the summer, and the results are quite noticeable, it is way better than last season.

On the other hand, a rookie showcasing their skills with other rookies and against other rookies doesn’t mean much except to prove he’s better than other rookies. It doesn’t do anything to prove he belongs in an nhl lineup. We already have the young stars tournament for that. We don’t need another one.
The nhl pre season is to find out which of those standout rookies can fit in with nhlers. Playing them with and against actual nhlers accomplishes that.
Plus it’s not like these really are top to bottom veteran line ups. They still have tons of rookies dressed and playing, often alongside vets.

You are totally right and it's an example of a process or rule not achieving it's intended outcome.
Since the NHL charges for pre-season games, they wanted to have a reasonable number of veterans. To achieve that teams are signing PTOs and dressing 4th liners to fit the quota.
So it hasn't even done what it was supposed to do.
It's a dumb rule and should be removed.
