Honestly anything over $10M is horrible for Marner IMO but Dubas screwed himself (and the rest of the league) with that Matthews contract.

Most importantly, what does this do for Tkachuk's value?

Wasn't the Nylander deal similarly oddly specific

What a painful process this was... like passing a Kidney stone, so please let the RFA signings flow free.

Its all about term not so much dollar value. The Matthews contract at an 8 yr term, which is what they should have gotten, would have been fair market. Marner at say 10.5x8, totally fine, but these 8 year dollar values at 5 and 6 year terms is ridiculous. And yes Dubas screwed himself and the rest of the league.

That is what was "leaked" seems like PR spin though.

Now the GM looks good and the player is still a good guy

The combined cap hit of John Tavares, Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner is $40.489366 million. The salary cap for this year is $81.5 million.

This is nuts.

The Maple Leafs are paying $167,635,000 over the next five years on three forwards. That is $33.5 m per year for three forwards for the next five years.

To put that into perspective, the Flames are paying $15.5 m for the only three players they have under contract for the next five years—a top-line forward, their #2 centre, and a 22-year-old #3/4 defenseman.

For the same money that Toronto is paying their top-three forwards this year the Flames can afford their entire top line, their reigning Norris trophy defenseman, and will still have money left over to pay their budding star left winger on a long-term deal with room to spare.
