^ Ehh, that's too simplistic to say it is all the players fault. The first few years of the current CBA, for instance, they lost between 10-12% to escrow. Remove the 5% inflator and they still lose a big chunk of their stated salary.

The problem is the result of faulty assumptions by both sides in 2005 that bizarrely was not fixed in 2013: it was believed that as many teams would spend below the midpoint as did above. The midpoint was expected to represent the median payroll, but the very nature of the cap pulls many teams over. As long as the 50% HRR is set at that particular midpoint, the players are going to lose a chunk of money to escrow far more often than not.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr says it was a good discussion and update with players tonight. No decisions taken. More CBA discussions with the NHL coming.

Fehr says discussions with the NHL so far have been “cordial” and free of the rancour of the last time around. So far anyway.

Fehr said extending the Sept 15 opt-out deadline decision has not been raised. And my own sense, FWIW, is that the NHL would not be interested in agreeing to that. Both sides would have to agree to that.

LeBrun's latest article:'

https://theathletic.com/1187665/2019...-negotiations/

Summary:
There will be no deadline extension of the PAs Sept 15 opt out date
Number 1 issue is Escrow
Forumlas are being looked at to ensure salary cap is more in line with the natural arc of HRR
NHL views the 50/50 share as non-negotiable
The NHLPA is the one suggesting an extension of the CBA through 24/25
Olympic participation has not really been broached in meetings but if there is a World Cup in 2021, the PA will want assurances that every effort is made to include the Olympics

When they're talking about a 2021 World Cup are they talking about something mid-season in 2020-21?

A fall 2021 World Cup followed by the 2022 Olympics less than 6 months later would be ridiculous.

^ Can't recall where I read it / heard it but yes they would do the WC in the middle of the season rather than prior to the season

Yes it will be a February 2021 World Cup. Pretty much replaces the all star break

Probably not the thread for pipe-dreams, but I'd be interested in a 3v3 Canada Cup.

Injury risk is miniscule, and could work either pre-season or during season. I'd favour pre-season - early part of training camp for higher level players is mostly about getting game shape cardio and 'touch'...which would be well achieved.

You'd have at least 3 Canada teams - Team West, Team Ontario, Team QC & Maritimes, and maybe 1-2 for US. Could have a round robin in each of these regions...then maybe semis+finals happen at the All Star Break. Could still do the skills comp and maybe a 'sticks in the middle' game for the other All-Stars.

It feels unlikely to get full passion 5v5 for anything outside the Olympics, but I think you would see tremendous skill displayed, and every country could be pretty competitive (still probably requires a version of Team World). 3 Team Canadas = more revenue.

TBQH, I'd rather watch the World Cup than the All Star Game.

I think that is something we can almost all agree on.

September 15th, CBA opt-out deadline day... Or not.

Guess we'll find out tomorrow if there will be peace in our time or if the one-year clock starts ticking.

Bob McKenzie posted a long Twitter thread on where things stand this morning (starts here): https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/s...54850124242944

https://twitter.com/user/status/1173554850124242944

Not really any new information for anyone who has been following the saga this summer.

The NHLPA voted last night via conference call and have made their decision as to whether or not they will use the out clause to terminate the CBA early. The decision will be announced sometime today.

----------

My guess is that the players will choose to use the opt out clause because it forces the league to remain at the table and continue to negotiate in good faith.

If this happens, I think there will be a new agreement in place to either extend the current CBA with some minor revisions to address escrow and Olympic participation (among other minor issues on both sides), or a new CBA that addresses these issues prior to next September's deadline.
