Unlikely.

6 x $6.75 = $40.5M

5 X $8M = $40M

So, at $8 or $9M, he is making as much or more for 5 years than he got for 6. That is not happening. More likely is that a 5 year deal comes in around $7.25 - $7.5M

In general, I agree that long contracts are tricky. I like 6 year deals. But they definitely cost more, if they are UFA deals.
Because a tweet came out that that was his ask. And that creates the negotiating ceiling. Any contract was coming in well below that.

A bunch of people here were prepared to pay his ask.

BTW, agreed that the number on a higher salary/shorter term are about the same. That’s kinda the point. Gio was arguable underpaid during the bulk of that contract, and now he may be overpaid on the last 2-3.

No chance he agrees to a year at zero pay (which is what has to happen if you compare 5 X $8 and 6 x $6.75)

As to the fact that many fans were prepared to pay it, well that isn't really an argument - we see in every thread that there are fans that are WAY off on every negotiation expectation.

I don’t understand that - he’d be saying “I understand that you only want to pay for my prime years, so pay me as a prime player. OR give me a decent salary for a little longer into my twilight and I will discount my elite years”.

I think it’s unarguable that Gio was much better than his salary up until last year.

But he isn't worth zero in the last year, which is what you are offering.

Is the last year worth less? Yes. Would the AAV have been higher if he signed a 5 year deal? Yes.

But you are wrong about $8 - $9M. Full stop.

I suppose I exaggerated to make the point, but the other thing is Treliving did get a good deal on the 6 years IMO. I don’t think anyone would have squawked at $7.5x6.

But if they do plan to play cheap youngsters on the 4th line, there’s no better vet than Ryan to put them with.

I’d even consider moving Ryan up with Monahan and Gaudreau and moving Lindholm to centre Tkachuk and have Backlund and Mangiapane form their own line. This would really spread out the scoring and mitigate any weaknesses in the 11th and 12th forwards.
In the first 48 games Mangipane had 8 goals 15 pts and was -1 after the All star break he had 20 games 9 goals 17 pts +5

Post season 10 games 2 goals 5 Pts -2. Became 3rd liner behind Bennett, Lucic and Dube.

If it came up to him and Dube who to protect in the Seattle draft it would be a hard choice but to me it looks like Dube

Really hard to arbitrate 20 games as a solid top-6 with 58 games as 3rd liner.

Tree’s definitely still in a period of time where he needs to execute at a high level. Mangiapane’s deal is an important one.

If we’re going term on Mangiapane, we’ll see a trade between now and the 20th - otherwise, we can’t really afford to go beyond 2 years.

Condensed timeline for everything. Hopefully we can get Mangiapane inked before arbitration.

Interestingly Jake Virtanen is not one of the announced arbitration dates.

Has he been extended and not announced?
**Updated, it’s October 28th.

I just think Mangiapane is going to be dealt for an RHS RW.

Can't shake it.

Nylander for Mangiapane and picks or prospects or both!
Cap space for Ryan and picks!

Gaudreau Monahan Nylander
Tkachuk Backlund Lindholm
Lucic Bennett Dube
Yadda Yadda Yadda

Less than a week to get a deal done or have to live with arbitrators decision. Will be interesting to see how it goes.

With one good year that's risky depending on AAV I guess. Guess we will find out in a week

Crossroads decision for the team and the player.
I like Mangiapane, but if you could leverage him into an upgrade like Nylander it would be hard not to.
For someone like DeBrusk....not so sure.
