Icon40 Pens trade Sheahan, Brassard, 2nd, 2x4th to FLA for Bjugstad and McCann

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Derek Brassard traded to Florida. Part of a bigger deal. Players still being told.

Does Florida really gain anything by losing Bjugstad?

Bjugstad is a prime "change of scenery" candidate. His career has been stalling and this could be great opportunity for him to get back to where he was and where he should be.

Penguins save a few mil in cap space with this deal too.

Does Florida keep Brassard or flip him?

This is a big trade.

Yikes on the Panteros giving up Bjugstad.

Bjugstad seemed to struggle this year, a change of scenery is probably great for him.

huge deal, wow.

Both guys are UFA?

Wonder if Tallon is clearing the books to go big at the CBJ guys or maybe an offer sheet at one of the many desirable young RFA's this summer?

Hope it totally screws their chemistry for the Fla, Tampa, Pit, Trip. Seriously though Pit always seems to make a big move mid season that’s triggers a late run.

Doesn't Miami have a heavy Russian population? I think I read something that Panarin might want to live there.

I definitely take McCann and Bjugstad over Sheahan and Brassard even though Bjugstad has seem to hit a wall in Florida.

Cost to upgrade is a 2nd and 2 4ths? Pretty good move by the Pens. Looks like Florida may ship Brassard at the deadline for more picks and then make a run at Panarin in the off season. I don't hate that either.

In isolation, seems like the Penguins overpayed but this trade has a first domino feel to it. They're probably trying to buy big.

EDIT - never mind. Jared McCann. Read McGinn. Huge difference there.

I like it a lot for Pittsburgh.

If you look at the last two seasons:

McCann: GP 114 G 17 P 46 (22 years old, $1.25M next season)
Bjugstad: GP 114 G 24 P 61 (26 years old, $4.1M for two more years)

for

Sheahan: GP 130 G 18 P 41(27 years old, UFA)
Brassard: GP 112 G 30 P 61 (31 years old, UFA)

So the stats are pretty similar the last two years. But you get way younger, a lot more upside, and more contract control. At the cost of a 2nd and 2 4ths. I honestly could see McCann working well on a wing with Crosby too. Lots of speed there.

I'd be shocked if Florida isn't just flipping Sheahan and Brassard as UFAs. Do think they will try to go after Panarin, and Bobrovsky in the offseason.
