Please feel free to correct me on this as it is more of a general thought that anything, but would high speed rail be a way to help with the housing issues that we currently have? If you can get to Medicine Hat in about an hour (trains in Europe routinely go 300km/h or faster), would that entice people to live in Medicine Hat and just commute in everyday? Two hour commute daily for people vs say 1.5 hours in the burbs of Calgary. Throw in housing cost savings, ability to work on the train, and small-town living, maybe it would seem like an interesting proposition for some.

all of these ideas require far too much infrastructure.

I think the solution to moving people long distances is clear.

Spoiler!

Med hat is probably a bit of a stretch.

You have to assume at least 15 minutes of travelling around on either side of the commute, and to average 300 KMH, you probably have to approach a max speed of 400 KMH, basically Med Hat would be looking at 3.5+ hours of travel / day.

I think you need to get it down to about 2 hours of total commuting / day to move meaningful levels of people. If you legitimately had an High speed Alberta City System, (Med Hat, Lethbridge, Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Grand Prairie), you might see a good uptick in property value in Lethbridge and Red Deer for daily commuters, and in 1 bed small condos for Calgary and Edmonton (because I could see Monday Morning / Friday afternoon commuters on a 1.5-2 hour travel out of Medicine Hat and Grand Prairie). Doubt it does much at all to effect property values in Calgary / Edmonton, might even make things worse by concentrating commerce a little bit more than it already is.

Trains to both city is stupid. The transit systems are so bad you will still need to rent a car... AB Republicans are idiots.

Not if you only need to attend something downtown.

None of Alberta's cities are centralized enough to do this, business are spread out all over.

I might think the bigger problem with daily train commuters from Medicine Hat is that...well, when you arent at work...youre in Medicine Hat

Possibly. But if the study shows that a majority of people currently flying or driving between Edmonton or Calgary aren’t straying very far from LRT range then it should be fine. How many people visit Banff during tourist seasons and go somewhere that their transit doesn’t reach?

Sorry I was seven hours late. Some yokel playing the banjo while sipping moonshine didn't hear the bullet train at a crosswalk. Had to walk for hours til I could get a mobile signal and find the closest Red Arrow station.

This is the third time. You're fired.

By the way, we lost Ballinger--drowned and smashed against several rocks after getting caught in the river current.

Well then you're both fired.

Would love to have a high-speed train between Calgary and Edmonton! I know my company would use it a lot, so long as the terminuses are downtown in each city.

If you gave businesses a reason to be closer to the downtown core, they would.

You hear that wooshing sound in the distance? That's the sound of our money being flushed down the toilet.

They announced a plan to consider a plan to build a plan. This whole thing is less serious than the Calgary Next pitch.

It’s pretty serious to the guys getting paid millions to do the study, wonder who gets it.

Sounds like they’re going to try and figure out how many people would benefit from a rail line to fort mac

The Calgary Next pitch was serious for a select few as well, but at the same time, dead in the water.
