Whatever his personality issues are, I'd love to have him back. He is a great player.
That said...I dont think we can afford him.

Dougie can score and won the Flames a few games with heroic point shots. But his defensive play was lazy, disengaged, and never close to dominating. Adequate was all you could hope for, and lazy hooking penalties really cloud my positive memories of him. Add the fact that he leaned very hard on the organization to aquire and play his brother....it's a "no" for me.

He also asked for a trade, it's not happening...not sure you get 8-9M worth of hockey player anyway.

I wonder if getting Hamilton back while still keeping Lindholm and Hanifin would finally make us winners of the trade?
Technically speaking, NYR probably ended up with the best player in the deal, so...

There are very few teams that make more sense that Carolina.
Hamilton should re-sign if they're offering anything close to market value.

Sounds like Dougie is happy there in Carolina, I also don't know where he would go and who would sign him. Maybe he's just testing the market to see what teams are willing to pay and then re-sign with Carolina.
I'm guessing he stays there with the Hurricanes.

While maybe the stagnant cap will reduce it, I think Hamilton is primed for a contract that leaves 90% of poster saying "wow, so expensive, why would any team offer that?" Especially if he ends up signing for less than 8 years. They'll say it will become an albatross, and they'll likely be right as is the case for pretty much all major UFA signings.
When Burns signed his 8 year, 8M per, NTC contract, he was 32 and the contract would bring him to 40. Since that signing, Hamilton leads all defenseman in goal scoring, the cap has gone up (obviously not as much as expected), and Hamilton, unlike Burns, will have all his contract be "prime" years. Dude should get paid.

Oddball defencemen seem to fit in there. Joni Pitkanen was another one who seemed to find a home in Carolina.

I don't think there is a snow balls chance in hell that'd he'd sign with the Flames, but a top pairing Dman that can provide offense is probably the 2nd biggest need behind a legit #1C.
Imagine if Tre traded for Eichel and signed Dougie this off season. Would be a huge couple of steps in the right direction.

"Hey, Dougie. Darryl Sutter here. How'd you like to sign a two year with Calgary for $2 Million per year with a $2 Million bonus when we win the Stanley Cup? That's how you circumvent the cap without circumventing the cap... ...Okay, Dougie. Brad will call you."

i caught part of kris versteeg's hit on the fan yesterday and the one guy on the fan (i forget which guy it was) did not even throw out the possibility of carolina looking for help with respect to having other teams tell dougie what he is worth. he seemed to think that dougie was gone from carolina.
i thought it was a pretty one dimensional take from a guy that is paid to talk about sports

I know you are mostly joking, but those types of bonuses are not allowed.

We should only take him back if he changes his name to Doug.

How about sign Dougie for $1 million a year and hire Freddie for $10 million a year to be "Director of Player Personnel"
