I'm struggling with this. My Mom has been in a really deep depression this year with all the isolation. She's texting us showing us her Christmas baking everyday. She absolutely lives for Christmas and family time. I'm really concerned how it'll affect her if we aren't able to gather.

We usually go to the in laws on the 24th with her entire family. That's completely off the table for us but I assume the rest of them will all still meet up
On the 25th my wife wants both her daughters to join us for the entire day. One of them lives alone, works from home and has up til recently visited us every week. The other one works in public, lives with her boyfriend and apparently will be spending the 24th with his family. She's not been super vigilant throughout all this and has only been here twice. I've expressed my concern to my wife but I don't think it's an argument I have a chance of winning

I am purchasing a large deck heater as a present to my parents, it's a little more than I usually spend but I am hoping it will allow for some short visits with some hot chocolate this winter

I wonder how many families will get together over the holidays in spite of all the warnings and news just to "accidentally" create a lifelong yearly Christmas memory of them having killed a mom, dad, aunt or uncle via covid.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see some sort of Xmas day exemption with this government
Not that I agree with it but I wouldn’t be shocked.

Just cancel the damn thing!
My brother can't fly home due to the USA/Canada border closure. Same for my niece, nephew and sister.
My 84 year old mother is in the high risk category so friends are not allowed to visit.
There's nothing good about 2020 to celebrate!

We usually go to Calgary to see my parents and/or Victoria to see my wife's family.
This year we won't be doing either, just not worth the risks.
We drove out to Calgary beginning of September after getting covid tests and spent a week with my parents then, knowing Christmas would be unlikely and we don't want any of us flying and then seeing each other.
But lets be honest, people are going to travel and break all the guidelines are Christmas. I'm scared of what January is going to look like for Covid numbers and deaths.

Had planned on isolating and then seeing our families but it’s just too risky so we will be dropping off gifts on their doorsteps and doing a zoom get together

Well, your brother can actually fly home. He could fly to Calgary and still do the rapid testing as well. The border is open to air traffic.

We are considering flying/driving back to AB. My brother will not see another Christmas.
Logistically difficult.
- no longer direct flights from Chicago to Calgary
- no interest in connecting through Dallas/Ft Worth, etc.
May do this, on or about Dec 17
-Fly to Bozeman Mt, rent vehicle and get tested at Coutts.
-Have access to home of snowbirds wintering in US, will provide list and have home fully pre-stocked.
- Will wait out quarantine for 7 days/second negative test.
- Spend Christmas /New Years week at parents farm. They are basically in full lockdown already.
- 14 day quarantine period satisfied. Can arrange for visit with brother in palliative care.
It is possible to do. We enjoy a privilege that allows us to. It's a lot though. I may wait into new year and just go myself instead of dragging through all this.
I don't know.

This seems like the best reason to go ahead.

I'd do that without a second thought. But wouldn't it just be better to fly through another airport?

Yeah. Momma really doesn't want to connect. Like really doesn't. Best connection is about 12 total hours (assuming no delay). Can't connect through Canada and still qualify for pilot program. Also about $300/person more. Better coming back.
I dunno. Need to decide soon
Weather big factor too

Really sorry to hear, Eldrick. That's a tough one, but I think will be worth the effort.

Yah it’s bad situation. I’ve done the Bozeman thing and it sucks. 8 hours driving one way if weather is good.
