Canadians stranded in Barbados urge feds to scrap COVID test amid testing backlogs
|
Quote:
Dan, who requested his last name not be used, is urging the agency to provide travellers in Barbados the same exemption it gave Jamaica — letting travellers take the test on arrival at Pearson International Airport. Both Caribbean countries are experiencing backlogs in COVID-19 testing required for visitors to board a flight home.
|
Quote:
Dan and his wife travelled to the Caribbean island in mid-November for a vacation. Their 27-year-old daughter from Toronto and her friend from Ottawa joined them Dec. 17 and they all spent Christmas together.
His daughter and her friend were to fly back to Canada Jan. 10 on WestJet, but with the huge testing backlog, they still haven’t received their results.

lol. looks good on ya Dan, you dumb mother####er.

If only the government had put out some notice about avoiding non-essential travel...

Honestly, the biggest morons are the federal government. There is zero reason for international travel to be allowed. Now we have both the British and South Africa variants in Canada, when we're supposed to have our borders closed.
It doesn't magically just appear, people bring it in.
Don't feel sorry one bit for the Barbados travelling chumps.

Closing the border to all travel would not prevent the virus from getting here eventually. It's just a matter of time. We cannot completely isolate from the rest of the world, there is necessary interaction with things like cargo flights, ocean shipping, and even transborder trucking and railways. People will always be crossing the border and for valid reasons. All it takes is one person and the virus is here.
I'm not saying we do not need to watch our borders and we need a program for testing arriving people. But to say closing the border completely to international travel will stop the virus from getting here is naïve and also not practical.

Sure, those are all valid reasons.
But primarily its because tests, regulations and laws surrounding International Travel can change instantly. And then you're stuck.
Sorry, but I hope the Canadian Federal Government tells Dan and his family to hunker down in Barbados until their notoriously efficient and expeditious bureaucracy is satisfied that they can leave.
It'll get done. On Island Time.

But why then have they seemingly made an exception for travel from Jamaica?

There was probably a family acquaintance stuck there.

Shoutout to the person who brought their covid-positive kid to my kid's daycare. They got the positive test over the weekend, but managed to hide it from the staff for a couple days. All the staff and kids/their families in that room now have to isolate for 2 weeks, and the rest of the daycares families got the pleasure of finding new arrangements for most of this week.

This should be a criminal act. Hopefully they are charged and hopefully you guys don’t get it.

Thanks - not too worried about my family as our kids are in different rooms/go through separate entrances, so fairly well isolated. I'm worried about the staff and other families really as they had no say in the matter.

At the very least, there should be a list of these individuals who are acting selfish. They should no longer be able to use daycare services. People are horrible.

Might be tough to do in a private industry, but at the very least (if I was the daycare operator) they would no longer be welcome at that facility.

We got a bit more information on the situation - sounds like a shared custody situation where the one parent the child was with over the weekend knew there was a covid close contact, and didn't tell the other parent until a couple days later (and the child was asymptomatic). The "during the week" parent did all the right things as soon as they found out, but the weekend parent definitely should have said things to avoid a clusterfata this week.

Well, weekend parent is still a moron, but at least the during the week parent isn't plain evil.

Shared custody is really tricky during Covid. I don't envy anyone in that position. My grandson's father has cancelled visits a few time because he's afraid of getting covid. There were some cases in my grandson's school the last week before schools were closed here so he didn't want to take him for that weekend, almost cancelled on seeing him on Christmas too, but he ended up picking him up.
