Default Guitarist Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom etc.) has died

News has just broke in Finnish media that heavy metal guitarist Alexi Laiho, best known from Children of Bodom, has died at home last week at age 41.

Details are so far scarce. Apparently Laiho had been suffering from health issues for years, in part due to rough lifestyle, but his sudden death was still a surprise. Laiho had just announced his latest projects this winter.

This cut surprisingly deep for me, even though I wasn't a huge fan by any stretch. Bodom has just been one of those bands you can put on at anytime and they're guaranteed to deliver. I'm really glad to have caught them live at least once.

Too soon to say the least. Without a doubt among the best in his generation RIP.

This one really saddens me. Bodom was a favourite of mine. Too young, RIP.

Very sad news. Seen Bodom live many times over the years, big fan of their early albums. Thoughts to his family.

Extremely sad news. I don't venture into the off-topic forum all that often, but I've been a metalhead for most of my life and Laiho was a significant influence on many of the bands I like. CoB had their ups and downs in consistency the past several years, but when they were at their best they were such a fun, unique and innovative band. What a loss for the metal world and so young too. RIP.

Sad news. COB toured Calgary numerous times and always put on a great show. Guitar god. RIP Wild Child.

Glad I had a chance to meet him and all the other members of CoB, but he looked incredibly unhealthy at the last Calgary show.

Devastating news. CoB is my all time favourite. Been listening for the past 8 years and I'm still discovering songs from their discography and was looking forward to Bodom After Midnight. I'm happy to have met him in 2019. Rest in peace, Alexi.

It's pretty crazy how common it is among metalheads for Children of Bodom being their gateway band into more extreme metal.

I've had the exact conversations many times with others.

Were you at the unicorn pub after the Calgary show in 2019?

Yep. And In Flames circa Clayman too I find.

As a huge fan of Finnish melo-death this loss definitely resonates. CoB was never a personal fave but I definitely understood their importance and impact on the scene. A true talent. RIP.

The first time I saw CoB was in 2005 in Toronto. They were the opening band, on a card with Fear Factory and Lamb Of God. Absolutely mind-blowing. RIP.

CoB and wolfheart (i think? The opening band) came to the unicorn afterward for beers, still one of the best nights of my life. I shot the #### with Janne for the better part of an hour, super chill dude.

That is awesome. I got some goodies and autographs from the meet n greet but it's always better when it happens organically.

I saw them back when Devin Townsend opened for them at Mac Hall, great show.

Kind of wish they had done more power metal, this was my favourite tune of theirs:

Bodom was such a particular point in my life, I can almost see where I was when I played the hell out of the Follow The Reaper and Hatebreeder albums. Saw them in Vancouver in 05 or something like that. RIP, keep tearing it up somewhere.
