$3.75M for one year? That strikes me as a bit high, but it's good to have this sorted.
This leaves the Flames with $7,650,000 in cap-space with the following players on the roster:
F: Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Lucic, Coleman, Lindholm, Mangiapane, Pitlick, Ritchie, Lewis
D: Hanifin, Andersson, Tanev, Zadarov, Kylington, Welinski
G: Markstrom, Vladar

I’m ok with low cap hit and low stakes term, if he gels well with Sutter and earns a more prominent spot on the depth chart we can sign him to a bigger contract then. Either way it shakes out we are bigger and harder to play against this upcoming season.

pretty bad contract but the Flames didn't have much leverage

I think that's a great number. Let's see what he can do. If he's steady, doesn't take too many Bennetts and contributes a little offense this is a positive.
Flat cap makes the numbers challenging.

Less dollars than I expected. Way less term. Is he still RFA after this one?
I suspect we will see some finishing touches on the roster soon.

A one year contract leading to UFA is interesting. Wonder if this is just to get things squared away, with further negotiations happening during the seasons.

glad it is less than $4M and glad it is less than 4 years
gladly take the risk of him going UFA instead of over committing $$ or term

if this walks him to UFA it is a bad contract. I guess he either gels with the team and they make him part of the core or worst case scenario he becomes a trade chip.
Maybe he's part of the return to get Eichel! only want to sign for 1 year, back to Buffalo!

Except he'll be a UFA. I was expecting either a 1 year contract or a 5 year contract.
It seems clear he wanted quite a bit of money to forgo UFA years. I guess when you get this close to UFA, it's hard not to want to increase your leverage.
He could easily be a tough sign next year.
I'm assuming on a long term deal he wanted something starting with a 5.

Disagree.
Opens up some options. Keeps the cap hit lower than $4M so they have more room to add another piece without being forced to move someone out (Eichel wouldn't fit of course).
Plus if the Flames do a face plant they likely do better than the third they used to acquire him by flipping him at the deadline as a rental.
The more teams move away from this fear of losing players to UFA the more financial flexibility they're going to have.

Wouldn't say it's that bad.
His role is as a physical defensive d-man, and he's fairly strong in that role.
Sure his overall advanced metrics aren't great but he's a guy that will fill a role on the team and with the right partner I think he could have some success.

Also, nice to see something happening . The barren desert that has been the past month in terms of NHL action has been dreadful.
Now do more please!
