I remember going to Rollerland in the early 90's as a kid. Whenever I hear "I Like To Move It Move It" by Reel2Reel it reminds me of Rollerland

With the great 14% mortgage rate, you could buy a house for $105,155 and only have a monthly payment of $1,225.

You're right. I do tend to wander offtopic some times...may be related to the aging process.

There was one year (I think it was in the late 70's) where the Federal Government would give you 20% on a maximum deposit of $20.000. from your RRSP, for both husband and wife, for one year.

I miss easy street in Chinook, actually I miss just going into an arcade in general with a pocket full of quarters and wasting the whole day.

Easy Street was being used as a money laundering mask. Sad, but true.

I take it this outdoor section was on the south end of Chinook? Woodwards was there where the Bay is now, and its Food Floor was just south of that (before the 2003 reno) attached to the partking lot. Obviously the reno done about 10 years ago added the theatres south of that now. But that stretch, in the picture, once outdoors, then covered?

Holt Renfrew next to Spence's shoes? What did Holt sell back in the 60's to be the size of a shoe store?

I'm more and more convinced that the article from the Ottawa Citizen was the same one I remembered. The entry for Peter's Drive-In and MacKay's Ice Cream in the Best Hamburger/Best Ice Cream categories definitely triggered some synapses (I have a good memory when they are food-related. Something I'm still teased about today). Also, I recall Calgary winning best Airport.

The Google newspaper archive is incredible - lots of old Calgary Herald newspapers as well. Check out the selection of movies in June, 1981: The Great Muppet Caper, The Cannonball Run, Superman 2, Raiders of the Lost Ark, History of the World, For Your Eyes Only,
Stripes, Ordinary People... The past always seems like the golden age!
roller land WAS my childhood..thanks for posting that.

The old crappy Safeway in Marda Loop, I think there is a huge condo complex there now.

When I was a student, i can remember not having enough money at the till and being told that was OK. This happened more than once.

Also, can anyone tell me if the curry/Indian restaurent is still in Mac Hall. It was next to DQ, if IRC. I used to buy rice from him all semester, and during exams he would always put on some curry, "you can't study on rice alone". Think he was also a math prof.

"Rock hard at the Yard", the bar at the Highlander hotel on 16th avenue. they actually had regular prices for most beers but you could cheap out and pay about 50 cents less and go with Black Label, i belive it was? needless to say for a guy who didnt have much money, it was a black label night
