Double what I would have paid him to stay on the Canucks. Think that is now three players in three straight years that left the Canucks and signed with the leafs.

Not a good rebuilding move. Unless they need bodies? Makes no sense.

Likely going to flip him at the deadline for picks, like they did with Santorelli and Winnik.

How is this not a good move? it's a one year deal. He's still fairly young at 27. Can easily play the bottom lines and on the Leafs play higher till their younger are ready. Or like Sureloss said trade him for assets at the deadline.
It's not a parade planning move but it's similar to re-signing Stajan etc.

Good term. Good dollar amount. He put up 18 goals playing bottom six minutes last year. Despite the Canucks stink on him, he was definitely one of their bright spots last year.
Canucks fans were thinking he'd ask for more from them. Brad Richardson, who was somewhat equivalent, signed at 3 yrs 2.1 mill. So, having the short term of 1 yr is worth the extra .2 mill.

Not a world beater by any stretch, but I would have thought the nucks would want him back, as he did have a decent year last year. I guess they have faith in Horvat/Bonino.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

They are building through the draft. The guys they're signing now are placeholders. There is no big contracts being given-out.
The Santorelli/Winnik 1 year deals last season worked out brilliantly. Both played well and fetched big returns at the deadline (And Winnik returned to the Leafs).
If Mathias plays well, he'll be traded at the deadline.
Abnd they hardly threw away Kessel. they got a first Rounder+ a nice prospect in Kapanen.

1 year deal vs. Kessel's longterm deal, no more likely to make playoffs with Kessell then with overpaid 4th liner. They can probably easily flip him at the deadline as well.
They didn't throw away Kessel, I actaully think the return on Kessel was a fair deal all things considered.

Good signing, no problem with this at all. Actually thought Edmonton should have been in on Shawn, big, youngish centre/winger who's decent in his own zone. I guess he's hoping to raise his profile in Toronto.

Why would Vancouver not keep him? All that awesome C depth coming up the ranks?

He looked useless in the playoffs to me. Big dude who doesn't use his size. Not skilled enough for the top 6 and not not enough jam for the bottom 6.

Matthias chose the friendlier Toronto media over the Vancouver media.
