Default A bit OT: high pim numbers in the AHL

Not sure if anybody has ever talked about this or mentioned it before but looking at the AHL stats it definately looks like teams have more of a junior B, junior C mentality when it comes to penalties.

Having played roughly the same amount of games as most NHL teams this season, I find it pretty stagerring to see some teams have 200 - 300 more pim's than the Penguins who currently have the most of any NHL club at 739.

What do you guys make of this?

They're still lagging behind the Iron league in terms of penalty minutes.

I would blame part of this to the fact that guys still have not made it to the show. They will do anything it takes and sometimes this is borderline which leads to a PIM.
If you are a tough guy in the AHL chances are you will drop the gloves any chance you get to get that position of Derek England (anyone who watched the hbo series knows what im talking about) in the NHL.

I think that's likely it. Also the AHL "tough guys" guys are younger than many of the NHL fighters, so they are probably less disciplined, and "don't pick their spots" as well.

A lot of AHL referees are brutal and hand out misconducts like candy.

It's even worse than that. Some AHL players have told me that refs will officiate differently depending on who might be watching, where the game is, is it televised or not, etc. If a referee has an agenda and he catches a team in a place like Austin as an example with no higher-up in sight they'll take that as a chance to put the screws to a team.
