That happened the same night the Flames were eliminated by the Oilers in Game 7 in 1991. I saw the fire from our kitchen window, optimistically thought it could be our school!

It wasn't.

Bad night overall.

Every time I'm back in Calgary I hit up Atlas Pizza. It's like the one thing back home that never seems to change.

I used to get my shoes in that strip mall when I was a kid. I want to say it was a kids only shoe store but I can't exactly remember.

The best part of the Pizza Hut buffet was the build your own Sundae.

Atlas Pizza sponsored my dad's old timers hockey team back then, lots of memories of that place. Amazed that it is still going to this day.
I loved that Captain Cooks. When my sister and I were ages 10 and 9, my mom gave us money to eat at Captain Cooks by ourselves. We felt like big kids, ordering and paying for our food without any adult supervision.

That strip mall was great. West of Captain Cooks was a Mac's convenience store, and there was a Gondola Pizza where that Job Site 2 pub is located. Beside Gondola Pizza was a Pic-a-Pop. The only constant at that strip mall across these many decades are the Royal Bank and the laundromat.

On the NW corner of 52nd St and Memorial Drive is another small strip mall. There was a Canada Trust Branch located where the dental clinic is now. That was where I opened my first bank account. And there was also this great sub/donair shop located near the middle of that strip where I spent many hours playing Galaga.

Gondola pizza was the best hangover food of all time. Super greasy and thin. Pick a Pop was awesome, having a crate of pop down in the basement was a rare treat

Pick a Pop was fight in a crate for me and my dad.

I was forever taking pops and wandering around the neighbourhood leaving the bottle when I finished the pop. Sometimes a friends houses, school, parks, mall, you name it I left a bottle there. My dad would go crazy about it.

Good Times.

Google says there are still four Gondola pizza locations in Calgary. One in Acadia, one by the Glenmore Inn, one in Killarney, and one in Rundle.

There was a Gondola Pizza in the Winnipeg airport until it was replaced with a Freshii a year or two ago.

driving through Bankview the other day, used to live there on a few occasions and passed by where the old bankview video was on 14th and 23rd. The owner used to always ask if i was looking for an "ernest" movie. would use that joke all the time but thought he was quite funny. As an old guy, i actually miss the old local video stores.

If we're talking pizza, Mother's was the classic old-time pizza parlour. Going there for dinner was a big deal.
