We talk about Russian interference in elections, but our friendly neighbours from the south spent a bunch of money in the last election.

Well yah, but its to support Trudeau and the left so who cares really? I mean you see articles about this kind of thing but unless its about right wingers and perceived 'hate' no one cares.

I'd be interested in that, I don't recall all too many pro conservative groups that were active in the last election.

The biggest thing that stands out in elections for me is when the ads come out from groups who's names start with "Friends of", and its friends of teachers, or healthcare or public sector works.

And they scream doom and gloom about the evil right wing candidates. They're funded by Unions and do a lot of the negative campaigning for the NDP or Liberals.

Yup.

Quote:
Millions in foreign funds was spent in the 2015 federal election to defeat the Harper government, the report alleges. In total, 114 third parties poured $6 million into influencing the election outcome and many of those third parties were funded by the U.S.-based Tides Foundation.

Foreign money funneled towards Canadian political advocacy groups affected the outcome of the 2015 federal election, according to a document filed last week with Elections Canada and obtained in part by the Calgary Herald.

The 36-page report entitled: Elections Canada Complaint Regarding Foreign Influence in the 2015 Canadian Election, alleges third parties worked with each other, which may have bypassed election spending limits — all of which appears to be in contravention of the Canada Elections Act.

More on the Leadnow thing as the Federal Government gives them funding.

https://twitter.com/user/status/1083024698110369795

Its pretty unsavory to me that the Federal Government (Liberal's) is funding a political action group that actively and aggressively campaigned against the Conservatives. Plus a group that was being funded by American Groups.

At least it's in the national conversation now... I'm hoping that there will be some sort of investigation here.

So not sure if this has been discussed here, but this is a God damn disgrace.

The NDP want a legacy project, so they've decided to turn the Bighorn Country into another Kananaskis, without wanting to do any public consultation. So under pressure, they schedule consultations, then cancel them due to "threats and public safety".
https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...3-c447a3818505

The B.S. part of this is that someone called Shannon Phillips out on the claims that the RCMP told her to cancel the meeting, and reporters have been trying to get the RCMP to confirm this, and the horse cops are like "Nope, we never received any reports of threats, nor did we recommend that these meetings get cancelled". What a joke of a government we have.

Danielle Smith had one of the investigative reporters that tried to get the RCMP to comment. It was an interesting listen yesterday: https://omny.fm/shows/danielle-smith...er-examiners-a

And now it looks like they're trying to save face:

If the parks are approved wouldn’t that affect the proposed pipelines going to B.C.? Environmentalists will surely protest that you can’t put pipelines through a park.

Perhaps some creative engineering could turn them into some sort of playground apparatus for children? Some sort of slide perhaps?

John Horgan on the current pipeline protest

http://dailyhive.com/vancouver/premi...-blockade-2019

Seems to be a bit hypocritical considering that Trans Mountain had been approved and had sign off by all of the groups along the path, yet he directed his attorney General to go light on the protesters

This isn't some NDP legacy project. The North Saskatchewan Regional planning was started in 2014 and the recommendations from the RAC were delivered before the NDP even took power. This is a continuation of long term Regional Planning, not some political move that came out of the drop of a hat.

Consultation was also not abandoned. They extended the length of time the online survey was available and switched to telephone town halls. The people voiced their concerns about a lack of face-to-face and the government listened and is making other arangements.

That sure is a rosy way to look at it.
No offense is intended with that statement.

I see what has happened and think that it was either wildly mishandled, or intentionally setup to not really care what actual stakeholders really thought. They made up their minds and wanted to just go through the motions of making it appear like actual consultations were done. Online surveys are bunk, IMHO.

I get the feeling this is how many Native bands feel about Pipeline/Energy companies consultations.

Yeah, I can see that...

Another quick update/summary on this fiasco from the Herald:
https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...eb-of-untruths

Further to that, lots of speculation abounds that this was Shannon Phillips' way of ensuring that no further pipelines get built. If you make the western side of Alberta all parks, then you can easily control whether anything gets built or not, without any additional legislation/rulings. A lot of people take her anti-oil protesting in the past into account when it comes to this. The picture is maybe coming into focus as per her actual intent.

Everything west of the proposed provincial parks are already the much much more restrictive national parks. I think pipeline control is a red herring. Although the provincial park status could make it less Oil and Gas friendly, it's not really going to make or break any pipelines...
