What are the chances this gets done before the draft?

I am going to predict $6.75Mx5 years, $7.5Mx6 years, $8.25Mx7, or $9Mx8 years.

I am guessing he goes 5 or 6 years.

I'm guess 8x5 and he doesn't sign until late august.

Before the draft? We'll be looking at late August, possibly passing into September and maybe a slight hold out.

I wouldn't be upset if it was 5 or 6 yrs. We have a mini window any way in the short term to go big and load up like how the Jackets did for a massive run. We can hit the skids and draft that elusive 1st overall we've never had on the down cycle after if it doesn't pan out. Win - Win sort of?

Because his numbers could be argued to be better.

I would assume that Tkachuk could make a good case that he's actually better than Johnny at the same period based off of age. Sure Johnny put up better numbers in his second year, but that would have been his Draft+4 year that he hit 78 points. Chucky got 77 in his Draft+2 year. The arguement would be that Tkachuk has put up 174 points in his 18/19/20 years, Johnny put up 1.

I would sooner let Tkachuk go than see him signed for $8 million. He’s good but not great.

Gaudreau led his team in scoring by 15 points prior to that extension, whereas Tkachuk trailed the team lead by 22 points and finished fourth on the team overall in points. That's a big factor.

Playing with backlund and bennett//frolik rather than Monahan and Hudler.

Tkachuk hasn't played that year of his life yet. So there's really no comparison for two more years.

8 million is what it costs for those guys now....just look around the league.

If you never want to pay them that, then it will forever be a turnstile of players without building something, and you become a feeder system for the rest of the league to pick at.

The game has changed and so has who gets paid and when.

Lowe/Tambellini/whoever started this with the absurd 6X6 deals and we have seen the predictable results of inflation on top of it all.

People point to Dubas signing Nylander and Matthews to their deals, but it all started where all the no goodness starts, Toronto just took it over the top.

Top players will always get that amount it's just that top players are increasingly younger now and that's what it takes to grab them.

I used to think it was the oil that ruined the second contract but it's the lack of a third and fourth contract for most of these guys that increased the pay day.

I really hope Tkachuk works on his skating this off-season. He is incredibly slow and it is something that he can work on being only 21 years old. A faster and more powerful skating Tkachuk will help him reach the next level imo.

It’s largely irrelevant.

You are suggesting that the same player gets paid less on a team where there are other elite ( and older) players producing more, than if he was flying solo.

Chucky produced without playing with those other elite players for the most part. That’s actually quite amazing. If the Flames enter negotiations with your mindset, he’ll never get signed.

That Gaudreau lead team finished bottom 5 in the league. Tkachuk was a huge contributor on a second overall team. That’s a big factor.

But that's not exactly fair either. That Gaudreau team was a woefully unfinished rebuild.
