Wrong. The only vocal pronouncement of Boudreau's imminent employment by the Calgary Flames came from Eric Francis. The sources for this news are MUCH more reliable on the whole.

I didn't read the entire other thread, so this may be common knowledge, but I saw that the 'Canes gave the Flames permission to talk to Peters yesterday.

I don't love the move, assuming it happens, but I will withhold judgement. All I really want is to have fun watching the Flames next year. This was a tough year.

I bet you will be happy if the Flames start winning.

And then today Peters walked from Carolina, and there is a rumoured deal almost in place with Calgary.
Now you're up to speed.

This is 100% true and also misleading.
The only thing that matters is scoring more goals than the other side.
The reason some people (like myself) harp on possession statistics is they correlate strongly with scoring more goals than the other side.
If you have the puck in the offensive zone (CF%), shoot (SF%), generate scoring chances (SC%) and create high-danger scoring chances (HDSC%) more often than the other side, you are likely to score more often than the other side.
This relationship is not causation nor is it near perfect correlation, but it is strong correlation so I think it matters.

Wow. Funny and super depressing at the same time.
It took Chad Johnson standing on his head for a month to get us back above water. If that doesn't happen, we probably don't make the playoffs, probably don't overpay for Hamonic this summer thinking he's the missing link, and maybe, just maybe, get rid of Gulutzan mid-season this year because he's proven to be a failure?

WOW huh. We're going to need a few more suicide booths.
So, this has to be the fastest I've ever seen the "process" work Brad!!
This is your best of looking for the right guy???
Hope Brad realizes he's putting himself on a really short leash.
Another epic move. Wow. So depressing getting hopes up for a huge upgrade only to realise I should have lowered my expectations even more than I already have.

Hopefully he is able to change if things don't work out. Problem with Gulutzan was that he didn't adjust in time or at all.
Improved PP would have us in the playoffs so really he doesn't have to do too much to get us to the dance.
He seems like a guy that demands respect and that's a huge plus IMO because I see Gulutzan as the opposite.
How is he with regards to truculence? I dont watch the Canes so not sure what kind of game they play. The Flames could use some identity.
Underwhelmed with the choice, if that is the next coach. Preferred a vet like AV, but it is what it is. Can't blame Treliving because we don't know how much money he really had to spend.

You could tell this team was done in late Feb when they just reverted back to the same team they were the first few weeks under GG the year before.
I don't want to see this same flaccid system again - not only is it boring to watch, I think it is more suited to a team with a much higher skill level than the Flames currently possess on Forward. Peter's is the safe move to make imo and likely the one that is most likely to amount to the same or similar result.
|
Good lord. I think based on the early fan reaction that hiring Peters to be the next coach of the Flames is anything but a "safe move." Treliving is sticking his neck out with whomever he hires, but from many posts in this thread it is abundantly clear that this is about as bold a move as they come.

The correlation is not that high. There are lots of outliers. And there is a tremendous amount of noise in the data.
But even more importantly, if success at the NHL level were as simple and straight-forward as getting more chances, we could all be NHL coaches.

Wouldn't be surprised to learn Tortorella has actually physically thrown someone under a bus.
I'll keep an open mind on Peters but more sceptical than excited. Would be a lot more optimistic about AV being hired.

As a fan I grow very tired of the Flames "wait and see" approach. Why not choose a coach that everyone knows has had success in the NHL? Its puzzling.
