I don’t know US tax code but in Canada he for sure is well in tax evasion territory. The press is reporting as avoidance at this point which makes it a non-story, but who knows.

To my understanding the US has so many loopholes, but if you outright cheat your taxes they throw the book at you.

This is a real pickle for the IRS. They have shown teeth in the past, but arresting a former US president?

I have my doubts. I think he walks away from this by virtue of his current job. Sends an awful message however.

Yup. So far he's gotten away with every shady thing he's ever done, so I'm just going to assume that the slimy pr**k will squirm his way out of this one as well.

Also, I doubt that this news will move the needle one way or the other in terms of the election. His dumbass supporters probably think it's awesome that he cheated the system.

It's not about "getting him" to me - rather, it's just slowly re-establishing that there are actually facts to be found in the world, despite the big liar's obfuscation and denial of reality. It's always a good thing to prove the Emperor has no clothes.

Of course the Dems are focusing on how little he paid, but I think that is the wrong approach. I'm sure most of you would agree he has been fighting tooth and nail to hide these returns not because of that, but that it would show he in fact has been lying about his wealth, and that he's in big debt.

I'm betting Licoln Project is going to go after him on his lying about his wealth, not so much how little he paid in taxes, I mean his supporters will just say he was being smart, playing the system to pay as little in taxes as possible.

The thing that will upset Trump the most is people knowing not only is he not a billionaire, but that he's deeply in debt and a failure. Driving home that point will really get to Trump on a deeply personal level, hurt his ego and emberass him.

Yeah the debt should be the real focus here as it is a legit national security issue. A "rich" guy working the system to get his taxes as close to $0.00 as possible isn't a big needle mover, a guy who's entire financial existence is because of debt is a big problem.

Trump's biggest jeopardy is what Cyrus Vance might do.

Clearly his big debts also means he's a threat to being manipulated in his political decisions and actions. So clearly that is a clear and present danger if he thinks being nice to Russia helps his financial life, same with Turkey and others.

Yeah, a "Who owns your debt, Mr President? Who owns you?" sort of attack could be a really explosive debate moment if Biden wants to go down that path.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Even if Biden wins that is no win for the actual truth. See Obama and Keystone XL. See Snowden during Obama years.

If you want things to go back to they way they were that is one thing. Biden will probably be more like Obama. Which means lies, but not so obvious, and delivered more graciously.

Sorry.

Always worth pointing out that Jesse Farrar's (@bronzehammer) podcast Your Kickstarter Sucks is very good.

I think most people who dislike Trump would happily take that alternative at this point.

We need a new debate format with clear physical consequences if the candidates lie.

Like they both sit in electric chairs or something. Live fact checking and they get shocked if they're lying.

Or they bring back SLIME....Uh-Oh Presidential Edition! ??

It just makes him "Presidential"...look at the Clinton foundation for instance.

Do you think any of these people get into politics to be public servants?

Members of Congress are allowed to insider trade.
