Sort of... Kidd was traded for Giguere after all.

Almost, I agree. But he could show up next time and be undeniably lights out and all of a sudden he's back in the fold. That's just how goalies roll sometimes.

You can find averages etc but every situation is so different.
Calgary had three ... Gillies, Parsons and Rittich.
Rittich was the least glamorous of the three but here we are. Other two had issues that couldn't be helped and certainly played a role that I would argue exceeded a team's development skill.
Gillies had hip surgery after only 7 pro games ... I don't think he's been the same since.
Parsons had his development derailed both by injury and mental issues.
Calling either a bust is harsh given the circumstances.

ok so logic check ...
I pulled down 2000-2019 drafts
Merged moved teams
Started out looking at games played, but then realized that's unfair to players who are big time starters but have only four or five seasons under their belt.
So I created a stat of games played / years since selected.
The top five by this stat are ...
1. MAF 50
2. Fredrik Andersson 46
3. Carey Price 45
4. Henrik Lundqvist 44
5. Jonathan Quick 43
Best examples of this stat moving players where they should be ...
Fredrik Andersson, Connor Hellebucyk and Vasilevsky all moving into the elite category. Further down the list a guy like Carter Hart gets credit for playing a lot in a few seasons but isn't considered elite, or a starter until he has more seasons, which I think would capture the Jim Carey syndrome of rising and then falling off the Earth.
Each of these goalies are then sorted into five categories based on their games played / seasons since drafted stat
Bust
Cup of Joe
Played
Starter
Elite
Teams are assigned draft success points with the following weighting
Bust 0
Cup of Joe 1
Played 2
Starter 3
Elite 4
If there aren't holes in that I'll start writing.

These days are so fun.
Point out they're being a bit irrational and have them just attack the hell out of you with insults and drive bys all while staying classy and giving them nothing to pin to you.
The Oilers are the 5th place team in the conference, to suggest they are being insulted by not having a bye is so melodramatic.

I’m not willing to say Kidd panned out and with Rittich undrafted that leaves Vernon as the only decent Calgary Flames goalie draft pick. Depressing.

Wasn’t Ortio kept as a third goalie at the time they put Byron on waivers and lost him to Montreal?
Or do I have my years mixed up?

^ I believe that's 100% correct
They kept Ortio and Bollig over Byron.

I was never a fan of Kidd. I never really counted on him or trusted him in big games and he was atrocious in his playoff appearances here.
He played at the height of the dead puck era and for the most part had a pretty poor save percentage except for one year. He never got over his nerves.

A lot of goalies I was excited about at a young age and it fizzled quick. I was never that hopeful for Irving but he was a 1st rounder. Ortio was a guy I had hopes for but never panned out. I had confidence in Gillies as he had a lot to like about his NCAA career, and his size is impressive. He has not looked great in NHL action though and getting up there in age. Parsons was the next great one to get hyped about. Memorial Cup, World Junior dominance and a 2nd round pick. There is still hope but it is fading. McDonald never did anything to get us excited but another high pick as an early 2nd rounder.
This is why I have no expectations for Wolf who by all accounts is one of the best goalie prospects in hockey after the numbers he has posted the last 2 seasons.

But the Flames only got some good games from Kidd. The rest they gave up on and another organization developed and reaped the rewards.

Thought as much....just been a franchise long dearth of talent/guys that stayed sans Vernon.

I don’t know if that is sarcasm or genuine but I’ll answer and you can mock me if that was supposed to be green text.
The Flames have traded up in the first round exactly one time in their entire existence, one time when a player was so completely compelling that they needed to give up players in order to pick higher. The year was 1990 and they traded with New Jersey to move up from 20 to 11. So we could get the stellar Trevor Kidd. NJ also needed a goalie and took the next best goalie available at 20 a guy named Martin Brodeur.

Oh man the Flames made a lot of bad moves in the early 90s but the 1990 draft trade was up there in terms of sending the team in the wrong direction. If they decide to not bother drafting a goalie and stick with Vernon or just don't trade up and pick Brodeur there could have been another couple playoff runs and a less painful Young Guns era.
