the Sather quote in the Trottier article (referencing St. Louis as Calgary's farm team) is interesting
I would say at the time of the Hull/Ramage deal there was a view (propagated by Sather) that that was a fleecing for the Flames (with rumors the Flames were going to send another young player- rumored to be Roberts- as a player 'to be named later' in the summer of 88 to complete the deal
its clear even though Hull was having a good year in 88-89 that there were some that didn't think St Louis was dealing well enough with Calgary
bobbylouie, do you have anything about a rumoured deal involving Nieuwendyk for Lafontaine & Sutter? I recall hearing that and it was a year or two after the championship season. At the time I didn't want my favorite player to be traded but in retrospect that would have been another huge steal for Calgary.
Here's the Calgary perspective of the day the Islanders traded both Lafontaine and Sutter. There's no mention of Nieuwendyk being considered or having anything to do with it, but it does say the Islanders were working on trades for these players for months, so you'd think plenty of names got thrown around. However, one note, as of that date in October 1991, Nieuwendyk still hadn't made his season debut coming off arthroscopic knee surgery, so that might have scared the Islanders off if he was ever in the discussion earlier.

Wow! Talk about a what-if scenario. I had never heard this Nieuwy rumor before. If this trade played out for 91-92 season, you would have to think that dud of a year would have gone a little better for the Flames. Does Dougie still get traded? Potential early season lineup could have looked like this:
Roberts - LaFontaine - Theo
Ranheim - Killer - Makarov
Carey Wilson? - Sutter - Reichel?
Hunter - Otto - Stern?
Man, that 92 team was sort of all over the place. On paper they should have been so much better but it seemed like there were too many square peg/round hole scenarios.

Yeah. I only heard it 2nd hand from a season ticket holder who seemed to reveal good information from time to time. Like I said, I didn't want to think about the Nieuwendyk rumor because I was young and he was my favorite player. They knew details on a potential deal for Lindros, which I didn't hear similar details about until a few years ago, so it got me starting to wonder if they were on to something with Nieuwy too. Nieuwendyk for Lafontaine and Sutter? The Flames would have needed to add.
FYI, Wednesday’s post (Game 69 vs Pittsburgh Penguins) will include the 15-minute homemade game highlight package.
Awesome! Love seeing Mario play in this era.
Also, was interesting to see Roger Johansson's name pop up a few posts back. I had no clue we drafted him in '85. Is there any footage of him with the team in '89? Was he a black ace throughout the playoffs?

Gretzky was great but for me Mario just made things seem more smooth and magical.
This particular game might only be for you if you like seeing him get shut down, be ineffective and go -4. Although he did get an award pre-game, maybe I'll throw that together right now just for balance, because I'm pretty sure he's barely noticeable in the 15 minutes.
2) A synchronized swimmer was the Canadian female athlete-of-the-year
3) Mario Lemieux's one highlight of the night
I would have included some of this in the regular re-cap if the Flames would have let up with the goal scoring every thirty seconds since the videos are limited to 15 minutes.
Great work on these videos! What an addition to an already amazing thread.
Videos are absolutely amazing. Quality is top natch on these as well. One thing I've noticed: when did it become the norm for people to stand up and cheer when a goal is scored? It seemed like every time CGY scored in that game against Pittsburgh, you'd see crowd shots of people clapping/cheering while sitting? So strange compared to what you see today.

Except when Lanny scored! Everyone was standing!

Is it possible that after 19 goals in two games they just got bored and tired.

On a more serious reply, I do remember back in the 60's that the reputation for all Canadian crowds was that the game experience was treated more like a library and it was considered crude to be loud or obnoxious, even after a goal was scored. If you look at the videos of games from that era it's consistently true. A change was underway by 1989, but I think some of what you're noticing is a remnant from the way it always had been.
