Tough one for Peter Polansky as he lost the doubles final and also lost in the singles semi-final (both matches went the distance and the set scores were extremely close). Better news for Rebecca Marino though.
I’ve been playing a bit of tennis the past week and really noticed the grunting thing. Especially among women players. Pretty ridiculous hearing that from 5 courts away.
I assume that’s just a function of seeing it on TV. No other physical activity brings about those kinds of noises.

I find I do it a lot with racquet sports. It's not Vika-level stuff, but I definitely have an audible "umpf" in there. I must think it gives me more power

I really do think it’s a TV thing. Same reason I think I can flop it like Phil Mickelson around the greens or try and hit bombs off the tee. I usually end up looking ridiculous.
I doubt you make that same noise when kicking a soccer ball or hitting a baseball. But in tennis the pros do it so it’s OK.

Lareau and Nestor what a team! They had to beat the home favorites Aussie team in the finals to win Gold. This is probably the earliest memory I have of Canadians doing well in tennis.
