Default 18-19 Cap Projected at $78M-$82M

News Update

@PierreVLeBrun
NHL shared next season salary cap projection with Governors today: between $78 M and $82 M depending on negotiated inflator with NHLPA in June... so either way, up from current $75 M

At least $3M more in space due to the cap increase + at least $4M coming off the books from Stajan and Jagr. Get that Backlund extension done, Brad!

With Stajan, Versteeg, Jagr, the Mason Raymond buyout coming off the books, and possibly a Brouwer buyout, this team could fill holes with prospects and have a large budget left to re-sign Backlund and still add a good player if they want.

Plus 1M from Raymond buyout ending, and 1.75M from Versteeg contract.

Jankowski and Kulak are going to get nice raises though.

Oh yeah, forgot about the Raymond buyout ending and that Versteeg's contract was more significant. $9M-$14M in cap space right there, with Backlund the only significant UFA to be re-signed and no RFAs due for big pay hikes. Even figuring in AHL replacements or veteran signings to plug some of the lineup departures, $5M-$6M for Backlund should be easily achievable and quite comfortable under the cap.

Thats a significant bump, I thought $2-3M at best.

The cap figure is astounding, i doubt most teams will even spend to it. At the time when they introduced the salary cap process, there was only one or two teams spending that much(80 million). I am not sure even the Flames can keep up with that.

I predict Jankowski will sign a bridge deal similar to Sam, 2-3 years.

Yeah I don't expect anything crazy either, but it's going to be more than he gets now so it'll eat some of that cap space.

I'm not a cap guy, but I don't get how the cap is going up like it is. I mean fine Vegas is there, but that's just adding a larger pool of money to a larger pool, it shouldn't be bumping everyone's cap from 3 to 5 million bucks.

I mean frankly isn't a 3 million dollar increase equivalent to about $500 million in increased revenue?

I'm watching quite a few games and seeing a lot of empty seats in a lot of rinks including Vancouver and Ottawa, so I'm not sure how that makes sense.

I don't know how much room they'll have to add a good player. For a year perhaps, but after that Tkachuks contract isn't going to come cheap.

The potential Brouwer buyout will help. Just to make sure I understand this correctly:
Brouwer is getting $4.5million/year each of the next two years for a total of $9million owed
He's over 26 so take 2/3rds of that, $6million owed
Double the length and you've got a cap hit of $1.5million/year for 4 seasons

Correct?

I don't see a situation where they don't buy him out this offseason. $3 million/year in space easily pays for his replacement and then some.

The more the cap increases, the more it helps teams that are poor cap managers.

A year with a significantly increasing cap after some years without is not a year to grab a star free agent. It's a year to spend assets on a star already under contract.

If it's closer to $82 million, then we'll see an inflated free agency full of dumb car buyers racing into dealerships saying "I've got lots of money and want to get something awesome!!".

This is where every team flashes money towards star players that are set to be free agents while the Flames flash a surplus of D-men to GM's and snipe a star scoring forward under contract.

Resign backlund. Fill the rest with prospects.

Unless we get a true #1 Rw I don't think we need anything. Would prefer they wait and go crazy at the trade deadline

Good chance to lock up JANKO long term at value. 6 years 2.5 per.

or you let backlund walk and give tavares his $10M, and our center depth becomes tavares/monahan/jankowski/lazar

Way more teams will spend to it then should. That's why teams need taxpayer funder arenas and why we might get another lockout, because teams can't manage a budget that matches their revenue.
