Default Alberta Suicide Rate up Dramatically

Sorry about the title and the article.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...offs-1.3353662

But I think its an important thing to think about . If you or anyone that you know is feeling the pinch, feeling hopeless, feeling lost, or just plain tire, please reach out, talk to someone, ask for help, don't give up!!!!!

This is always a crappy, tough time of year. Make sure you keep connected, don't give up hope if you're in a bad spot, and don't feel shame about talking to someone or asking for help

It saddens me greatly when I hear of these increased stats. It's an indication to me that we as a province aren't doing enough to help these people. More resources need to be made available and we also need to do a better job of letting these people know where they can reach out for help.

One suicide is one too many

Major problem....

You seek help, they say you need to talk to a specialist frequently. It costs $200 a shot. Province has a program!! Hooray! What a minute, I don’t qualify because I’m earn to much. Doesn’t mean I can afford it. Especially after going thru a separation.

Bad times don't last. Awful feelings don't last. The way through might not always be readily evident, but that makes it no more permanent. And sometimes the most initially crushing things can be the greatest blessings in disguise down the road in retrospect, because sometimes it actually serves as an opportunity to discover just how resourceful and capable of growth you really are, and you might just discover how much happier and better off you are in a different place or circumstance that you could not have come into without things falling apart first. That's why it's important not to give up when things feel at their worst. Cause the worst is always a springboard to something else, you just have to hold in there to allow it to unfold. Remember that.

Yeah you do. There is walk in mental health care at the south family health center. They give you up to 16 sessions and on going psychiatric care if needed. The meds will cost you though if that's what you require.

Also, 48 is peak sadness...

Not surprised by this. I've had a real #### year but I deal with it by jumping on a plane and getting away from everything.

Lost a neighbour's kid to this last week. Kills me driving by and seeing the lights on in his room - can't even begin to think what the parents are going through...breaks the heart.

Its been said before, but please seek help - there are always options and people willing to listen. Things will get better.

Well stated and with good intent, but I disagree.

While true, it's advice not well received or advice one is often able to take when you're is the midst of a depression, or your level of misery is such where self harm and death is looked at as an option.

when you're at that level, kindly being told to "buck up soldier, better times may be ahead" isn't very helpful.

just looking at it from my experiences, of course.

Indeed. My depression mostly stems from the inevitability of death. Hard to find much inspiration in 'better times ahead' when I'm going to rot away in a box no matter what I do or what I believe or who I know.

For whatever reason knowing how small we are, what a speck of dust in the vastness our our universe and space, and how we all just end up as dirt.. is kind of comforting to me.

Don't worry about things so much, we're all just top soil.

Depression is scary #####. Approximately 6yrs ago, I felt like suicide was my only way out. Had gone through a messy divorce, was in debt up to my eyeballs and just hated my life in general. Fast forward to today, I'm with an amazing woman, been married for 6 months, got my finances in order and we have an addition to our family coming May.
No matter how bad things get, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Don't give up. Don't be afraid to ask for help and know there are people that care about you.
