Yup. Sounded like they're almost done. Just a formality at this point.

I have a feeling that he contributes at some point this season.

Treliving still chipping away getting everything done, big or small, without himself having a contract for next season. He should put a clause in any contract he negotiates from this point on that if he isn't brought back all those deals are voided.

Really glad. Having him and Andersson up is going to be huge. I suspect they both get games after the clinch.

The only question right now is if the first year of his ELC will be burned.

These situations also must be quite difficult for players in Hickey's situation. Naturally he (and his agent) would would want to play in a game and burn off one year of his entry-level deal.

However, this is a pretty important part of the season. Teams are scratching to make the playoffs or earn home ice right now and you certainly don't want to insert yourself into a huge game and be the cause of loss that is so important. Not a way to ingratiate yourself to your new team that's for sure.

I know a few insiders say he needs to play a game to burn a year, but that is a misnomer. His contract just needs to start this season.

It happened for Gillies, he didn't dress or play a game and still burned the first year of his contract.

Hickey turns 21 in a month. Not entire sure if that's important in any way, but sometimes putting things in perspective is important.

Sam Bennett (152 NHL regular season games and 12 playoff games) turns 21 in 3 months.

My post from the Back Burner forum on why it might not be such a big deal for Hickey to burn his first year:

Hickey is 21 years old in terms of the CBA definition (the CBA takes a player's age as of September 15 in the calendar year he signs an ELC). That means a 3 year ELC.

However if Hickey goes back for another year of college, he will be a 22 year old in terms of the CBA definition when the next college season is over and that means a 2 year ELC.

Flames may be willing to burn the 1st year of a 3 year deal to sign him this year instead of flirting with UFA, because technically they are going to lose that year anyways if they don't sign him this year.

The added bonus of him burning a year, is that he would be eligible for playoffs, but it would be highly unlikely they use him in the playoffs unless they go through a lot of injuries to their NHL and AHL depth. The disadvantage is that by burning a year he won't be eligible to be assigned to Stockton this season or playoffs.

What's the depth chart like should the Flames go deep into the play-offs and encounter injuries on the blue line?

Kulak?
Wotherspoon?
Andersson?
Heck, Mike Kostka has NHL experience.

Not sure where Hickey ranks.

His plan is to send in the G6 and Conroy aka "the closer" to seal the deal.

Does that mean we also start calling him Brandon Hockey?

Burn it. Burn it to the ground.

Hickey is not going to come out of his first contract warranting a Dougie-level extension. If anything, it behooves the player to not burn that first year so he has more time to impress the organization as a pro.

They should burn it. I assume he'll want to finish off his degree in the spring/summer semester, with no more scholarship the Flames ought to do right by him and burn the year so that he can get his signing bonus to pay for school.
