The Penguins are the only team to win a Cup in over a decade without having a current or future actual Norris winner on the team. And it's not like Letang and Gonchar weren't true number 1's in 2009 and 2016. Pretty much you need both, and a hot goalie.

Erik Karlsson is soon going to be on that list, and possibly Drew Doughty. Whatever you think of that list, every single player on it was a 1st pairing player when they moved.
Rafalski, Redden, Bouwmeester, Shattenkirk, Suter, Weber, Johnson, Campbell, McDonagh, Phaneuf, Jones, and Hamilton have never won the Norris Trophy, and are therefore irrelevant to your original claim. That leaves you with five valid examples out of 17. Try not moving the goal posts.

Meanwhile, on the list of #1 centres who have been traded since the '05 lockout, you conveniently omit Thornton, Seguin, and Stastny, just off the top of my head.

In hindsight, I wish we picked Zetterberg at 190 in '99, instead of Blair Stayzer. Even Martin Erat, who went at 191 would have been nice.

Honest question, would Jones even be Jones in Calgary? Goalies seem to do well in San Jose. Calgary isn't the easiest team to play behind.

Interesting that Kyle Connor is not in for the comparison. He is in his 3rd year after being drafted.

1st year as a rookie lead NCAA in scoring (35 goals 71 pts in 38 games) tied for 2nd in all time rookie scoring with Eichel (25 goals 71 pts in 40 games), beaten by Kariya 100 pts
2nd year 20 NHL games 44 pts in 54 AHL Games
3rd year 25 NHL goals and counting and playing on the Jets shut down line ( He plays with Wheeler who the Jets match with the other teams top line)

That compares favorably development-wise with the Flames best player

Gaudreau

1st year 44 pts in 44 games
2nd year 51 pts in 35 games
3rd year 80 pts in 40 games winning the Hobey Baker.

How much better would the Flames be with 2 Gaudreau level players?

Hard to judge how the loss of Hamilton would impact the Flames. Pretty much whoever plays the right side of Gio will look pretty good. If it was Stone or Hamonic chances are Gio gets more points. The PP might suffer but Connor would help out there as well.

Oh and the Flames have an extra year coming up with Connor cap hit at less than 1M.
