At least Jerry Jones is totally upfront about it.

Ha ha well that's not likely going to end well. I feel bad for their small but devoted fan base.

Geez, had no idea Francis sat on his hands as much as he did. That's insane. Deserved to be whatever'd.
As for the Owner going full Cuban, that'd be interesting. Lets see how much he knows about hockey. I have a feeling he gonna get fleeced a few times before realizing a GM is a good guy to have around. And not as a sock puppet you keep in the corner of your office.

It's not that Francis didn't make trades. He made quite a few. It's just that none of them were one NHL roster player for another. He traded players for picks and prospects, and vice versa.

Frankly i thought Francis was quite good at drafting. Canes were looking better this year.

Exactly. Treliving hasn’t made many nhl player for nhl player trades either. I guess Jones for Backstrom or getting Jokipakka as part of Russell trade.
The true “hockey trade” is hard to pull off.

Canes have a number of excellent young players, hope the Flames can snag a few from this owner/GM.

Well that's a recipe for disaster. It's what Viola did in Florida and he nearly ruined the team overnight before relinquishing hockey ops control to people who actually know how to run a hockey team.
Hurricanes are in for a world of hurt over the next year or two.

The more I read about this, the more the circus comes to mind.
There was just no need to throw Francis under the bus the way he did with that press release...not only RF, but the entire hockey department.
This likely is the death knell for the NHL in NC when its all said and done.

Rumour has it owner wanted to take more risks with trades at deadline. Francis wanted to stay the course and build team slowly.
I'm wondering if flames were in on some of those trades that owner wanted? I really hope so. Could be a potential fleecing come summertime if owner gets involved in trade talks again.

I’m sure there are 30 GMs looking for the opportunity to fleece here.

As dumb as this move is, I'd be the first person to make myself the GM if I ever bought a hockey team.

Well you wouldn't be the first person...Ron Francis is an owner of the Hurricanes.

Exactly. You'd have to think anyone who spends a decent amount of time on their favorite team's message board is dying to play GM. If I owned the team, I wouldn't suddenly lose the desire to make those decisions
I think we will see more and more of this in pro sports, especially as we see the move away from former players running teams. Maybe not owner as GM, but owner as CEO.

I'm not saying it's wrong, but sports is probably the only business where a private owner is seen as foolish for taking too much of a personal hand in the operations (public companies are different to an extent).

I do think there's potentially some merit to the "owner as GM" view. A GM's fundamental interest is the short-to-medium term. The owner may have a longer term view that works out better over the time. The catch is that the owner would need to be a top-tier hockey mind for it to work.
