Icon23 Ron Francis out as General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Looks like they are giving him a more ceremonial/advisory role if the report about the new GM reporting directly to the owner are true.

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/n...204033069.html

Quote:
The Carolina Hurricanes are moving general manager Ron Francis to a new position and will conduct a search to replace him, a source with direct knowledge of the decision said Wednesday night.

Francis will remain with the team as president of hockey operations, but his replacement as general manager will report directly to new owner Tom Dundon.

Francis was promoted to general manager in 2014 when Jim Rutherford retired and was tasked with a major rebuilding of the franchise. The team failed to make the playoffs in each of his first three seasons as GM and appears unlikely to make the postseason this season.

The Hurricanes appeared primed to make a leap forward this season, but Francis' choice of Scott Darling as the Hurricanes' new No. 1 goaltender has been an abject disaster and two of his other offseason acquisitions – Marcus Krueger and Josh Jooris – were waived last month. Jooris was later traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a minor deal.
edit: official now

Isn't the POHO supposed to be the in-between for the owners and the GM?

What was the point in creating the position if the GM reports directly to the owners and not the President of Hockey Operations?

Why would they need a new GM when they have the best cap manger in the game.

Advisory role maybe.

Francis is a big name for that franchise, not firing him out right so not to piss off the fan base.

It is also something the Canes do. did the same thing with Jim Rutherford.

Frank Seravalli

Ron Francis did not make a single NHL player-for-player transaction in his four years as #Canes GM. They haven’t made the playoffs since 2009.

Francis likely to get this role and then a quiet departure in the next year or so.

Have to think Peters is next.

No trades in 4 years is nuts.

They need a centre for those 2 young promising wingers. Stall and lindholm not cutting it.

Wonder if new gm would think about trading Lindholm? He would be great on right side of mony/johnny line

Time to jack up the salary, not make the playoffs, show some extreme losses and relocate the team.

Maybe Seravalli doesn't count that trade because McKegg was in the AHL at the time? He did specify NHL player-for-player trades.

I wonder if we see a trade this year between two nonplayoff teams like ottawa, arizona or buffalo.

John Shannon @JSportsnet
The inside story of the 'Canes change is that the owner wants to deal directly with the coaches and the players...and have a figure head GM. Dundon wants to do it like Mark Cuban runs the NBA Mavericks.

Why wouldn't he just name himself GM then?

Because when he trades his entire D corps for a collection of hockey cards, he'll need someone he can fire.

(See: Tampa Bay Lightning, when owned by Koules & Barrie.)

Because you can't fire yourself.

You put in a puppet, and when things go bad, you can him and get a new puppet.
