With the amount of cap space they have to work with I would bet that Colorado is in on just about everyone.

As of now, it sounds like the Stars are out of the mix for Mats Zuccarello. Could change, but that’s current state. He’s received interest from a number of teams so far.
|
Would Philly be interested? Former coach is there and they just traded RFA Hartman.

It was meant as a joke re: Brodie.

Was he also second in points and quality of competition? Not that I think Brodie was definitively the Flames's second best defensemen last year, but the argument in that direction—which is entirely reasonable—is based on more than just his ice time; its a combination of things.

He's never scored more than 31 goals and he wants $12 million a season long term?

The funny thing is, I could see him getting that in Florida or Colorado. Both teams have plenty of cap space to burn.

It’s a negotiation. If you start high you’re more likely to get what you actually want when you meet in the middle. I can’t blame him for trying looking at the deals that have been handed out so far this summer, especially considering those players weren’t true free agents yet.
Actually, this tactic is closer to haggling at a bazaar than true negotiation.
“This rug is 50 shekels.”
“No my friend, it’s not even worth 5 shekels.”
Then you end up settling on 25 shekels and everyone is happy.

Well yeah I get the Panarin camp is aiming for the fences but I do feel NHL GM's are among the worst in professional sports when it comes to negotiating with players and I nothing shocks me when bumbling idiots like Dale Tallon are given a blank check by ownership.

Well, his initial asking price is $12M, that's likely different than what he'll settle for. At the end of the day he'll settle for whatever is the most money. There is no reason why he should limit that amount by starting low. He's worth what someone will pay for him I guess.

The flames are in a one of the few non rebuilding teams with their top talent playerS around $6-$7 million or under contracts for another few years.
They really need to be going all in for the next few years, as they can ice a much more evenly built and deep team compared to teams spending more than half of the cap on their 5 best players.
Nhl gms are dumb. I bet the players vote in favour of longer ELCs and more limited RFA contracts, as the union players that have a vote are looking at getting nothing on their 3rd or 4th contracts, or having to sign cap minimum 1 year ATOs for the rest of their careers.

It's a tactic, but against an experienced negotiator, it doesn't always work out well. For exam ple, I don't think that's how Treliving likes to operate (or deal with agents who do it). He has a number in mind based on analysis and he pretty much sticks to it.

I think that's correct, but if he sticks to that tactic with Tkachuk, I doubt he gets a deal done quickly.

Well, I doubt a deal is done quickly with Tkachuk because he will start high and stay high. Treliving will start based on the team salaries, and existing comparable (but not the new signings which he thinks are out of whack). He also has little cap room so he can only do so much for Tkachuk. I think this one will go a lot like Gaudreau. Down to the wire, ending in a very decent wage but not the max term.
